From the publisher's blurb, "Max Kohnstamm was the first president of the European University Institute in 1974. Kohnstamm is a pioneer of post-war European unification. As Jean Monnet?s right-hand man he was closely involved in the establishment and design of the European Union (EU) as we know it today. Up to the present day he has devoted himself to a solid European and international community of law, aimed at effectively banning unilateral power aspirations and interstate violence. As a survivor of Hitler?s ?Nacht und Nebel? the young Dutch diplomat and former secretary to Queen Wilhelmina found himself both impressed and greatly inspired by Monnet?s campaign for supranationally organising the states of Europe as an alternative for war. Kohnstamm acted as secretary-general of the ?first European government?, the High Authority of the European Coal and Steel Community. In 1956 he left office to assist Monnet and the latter?s Action Committee for the United States of Europe. The two men constituted a team that exerted far-reaching influence behind the scenes of European and global diplomacy. After his years at the EUI, he played a remarkable role in Jacques Delors? policy drive for completing the EU?s Common Market." Hardback. Condition: New. Since 1992 the EU has incorporated a concept previously exclusive to states: citizenship. In embracing supranational citizenship the EU entered terra incognita, creating a concept resembling, but essentially different to traditional citizenship. This book provides an in-depth historical, political and constitutional analysis of the first 25 years of EU citizenship, and considers how it could develop over the next 25 years.Bringing together scholars from the fields of law, political science and history, this book takes a multidisciplinary approach to EU citizenship. It examines the history and development of EU citizenship, the roles of institutional and political actors, and the dynamics which it created in the post-Maastricht accession process, providing readers with a unique multifaceted examination of the topic. Exploring new insights into the nature and importance of EU citizenship, this book shows that after a quarter of a century EU citizenship has lost none of it's game-changing potential, and remains one of the most important features of EU law.Students of European law and politics and international relations will find this concise book an invaluable tool, with interesting and original insights into the present status of a key aspect of EU law. Its multidisciplinary approach will also help professionals working in fields relating to the subject.Contributors include: A.G. Harryvan, G. Hoogers, J. Langer, S. Neuman Stanivukovic, T. Nowak, R.
