The student is usually the initiator; he chooses the topics, asks most of the questions and decides when he has heard enough. The master is, so to speak, an expert witness whom the student examines.This volume publishes an edition of two elements of the Dialogus. Freilich kennt man seinen Namen als den Namen seiner Frau, und dass sie seine Frau war, vergisst man auch sehr schnell, weil man nur deswegen von ihr spricht, weil sie von einem übermächtigen Johann Wolfgang Goethe vereinnahmt wurde, der dem Ort des Geschehens so sehr seinen Stempel aufdrückte, wie kaum ein anderer Mensch. Josias von Stein erscheint erstmalig in einem völlig neuen Licht. Der Stallmeister am Musenhof in Weimar war ein auf Grund seiner Ausbildung kultivierter Mensch, dem Bildung allerdings nicht viel bedeutete. Allein die Feststellung, dass er in einer platonischen Beziehung seiner Frau zu Goethe keine Beeinträchtigung seiner Besitzrechte sah, schließt von vornherein aus, dass man es hier mit einem naiven, d.h. auch instinktgesteuerten Trottel zu tun hat.
