Beau indique les maladies sous l'influence desquelles elles se produisent (maladies infectieuses et états inflammatoires) et montre, compte-tenu de la vitesse de croissance de l'ongle du pouce (1 mm/semaine), que la distance entre la dépression et la matrice de l'ongle permet d'indiquer à quel moment la maladie a existé. Beau laissa son nom à ces dépressions unguéales (lignes de Beau).
