Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xiv, 225 pp, colour frontispiece and 104 black-and-white ills. From the blurb: "Chrétien de Troyes was France's greatest medieval poet - inventor of the genre of courtly romance and popularizer of the Arthurian legend. The forty-four surviving manuscripts of his work (ten of them illuminated) pose a number of…questions about who used these books and in what way. In Sealed in Parchment, Sandra Hindman scrutinizes both text and images to reveal what the manuscripts can tell us about medieval society and politics. The manuscripts emerge from Hindman's analysis as evidence of two crises. First, the enormous popularity of Chrétiens knightly tales offers provocative commentary on the political crisis of the northern French aristocracy, which in the thirteenth century sought to redefine its role after the rise of a centralized monarchy under King Philip Augustus. Second, the well-worn illustrated manuscripts are tangible examples of an uneasy coexistence of oral and literate cultures, offering insights into a "crisis in reading" that occurred as; medieval society passed from a period of public performance to one of private, reading. Through its analysis of the texts, pictures, and the physical character of the illuminated manuscripts of Chrétien de Troyes, this book exposes a process of cultural change in medieval French society at the end of the thirteenth century." Slightly pulled at front hinge (but firm) otherwise Very Good.

Laminated pictorial wrappers, 4to, 28 cm, 103, [1] pp, colour ills, facs. 37 items. From the introduction - "Begun in 1604 and completed in 1611, the King James or the Authorized Version of the Bible celebrates its 400th year anniversary in 2011. Called 'the book that changed the world,' the King James Bible became a unifying te…xt for the entire English-speaking world. The epoch- making task of translation was undertaken by fifty-four (some sources say forty-seven) scholars, who revised existing English translations with reference to the original Hebrew, Greek, and Latin. . The King James Bible did not appear out of thin air - nor does its history begin with Bibles printed by Gutenberg, instead, it was the culmination of a long history of the transmission of the biblical text in manuscripts copied across Europe and beyond during the Middle Ages. If these texts did not all directly shape the creation of the King James Bible, they still vividly call to mind other cultures and other historical moments in which the Bible played a central role. The thirty-seven manuscripts and books explored in this catalogue bring to light the pre-history of the King James Bible by examining the widening access to the Bible that eventually led to the creation of the Bible said to be the 'best-selling book of all time." From the introduction: "This catalogue, the third in a series of catalogues on text manuscripts, brings together forty codices from the twelfth to the seventeenth centuries from Western Europe. The subject is Reform. In this case, we treat Reform… in the sense of "reformatio," as it was used by reformers within the Church from St. Bernard to Geert Grote, and the title "Paths to Reform" evokes the multifaceted course the history of Christianity charted leading up to the Protestant Reformation in the sixteenth century." Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 8vo, 28 cm, 20 pp, colour ills. 4 items. Catalogue of an exhibition held at Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, London in November-December 1989. The four miniatures show Scenes from the Life of Christ and were produced in Bruges, c. 1525-30. From the introduction: "The present group of four miniatures, w…hich have been attributed to Bening since they were first published in 1910, were painted for a member of the important Spanish family of Enriquez de Ribera. They have never been systematically studied, because they have been in a French private collection for nearly a century. In fact, two miniatures among the four have never before been described or reproduced. The identification of a group of eleven sister leaves and cuttings, assembled here for the first time, makes possible a reassessment of the place of the Enriquez de Ribera manuscript in Bening's corpus." Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book introduces a general theory of curriculum construction using two fields of instruction as examples: physical education and horticulture. The author defines curriculum development as the identification of knowledge and skills that students need to acquire, before selecting lea…rning exercises directed at developing these skills. The author discusses the importance of considering remote (or ultimate) objectives in addition to immediate objectives so that skills and knowledge acquired build on one another and contribute to a well-rounded education. The author also emphasizes the importance of understanding that student learning happens differently for different abilities, and the need for instruction to adapt to these different learning styles. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 4to, 28 cm, 147 pp, colour ills. 43 items. From the Foreword: "This catalogue, and the exhibition it accompanies, grew out of two interrelated concerns; a conviction of the aesthetic value of illuminations as independent works of art in their own right and a conviction in the scholarly necessity o…f studying illuminated leaves and cuttings as membra disjecta from books. For this reason, the body of the catalogue is composed of two independant [sic] sections, presenting complementary descriptions of each of the forty-three items. Section 1 focuses on the artistic content (the style and iconography) and the historical context of items. Entries in Section I adapt a standard format used for catalogues of drawings, including at the beginning basic information on physical description, provenance, and literature. Entries in Section I thus treat the items as they were considered when they were collected, that is, as miniature paintings by (usually) identifiable artists. In this section, I have therefore deliberately refrained from discussing the items as fragments from books. Section II focuses on the codicological descriptions of items. Entries in Section II adapt a standard format of scholarly cataloguing that has gradually evolved for leaves and cuttings, in which they are treated as fragments from books, with all the implications resulting from this method. Full physical descriptions of the production, the script, and the illumination are provided. Actual rectos and versos are identified. The identifies and locations of sister leaves, that is, leaves that derive from the same original manuscript, are given. And the identity of the parent manuscript, when known, is provided. The scholar, working from information found in Section II, should easily be able to access either related leaves from the same manuscript or related manuscripts belonging to the same group. A working bibliography of basic references is supplied. The Introduction offers a brief sketch on collectors and collecting, focusing on the public sale in Paris of the collection of Frédéric Spitzer. Occuring in the 1890s, the Spitzer sale is a kind of watershed. Many old collections, most of which are now dispersed, predate it; and "new" collections - those of George Salting in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, of Pierpont Morgan in the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, of John Frederick Lewis in the Free Library in Philadelphia - were formed right after it. The treatment of miniatures as independent paintings in the Spitzer sale departs significantly from earlier Victorian attitudes toward illuminations as curiosities and forms the basis of the aesthetic attitude toward miniature painting presented here." Catalogue of an exhibition held at Hazlitt, Gooden & Fox, London, Nov.-Dec. 1988 and at Maruzen Co. Ltd., Tokyo and Nagoya, Feb.-Mar. 1989. Near Very Good.

Cloth, gilt cover-title, 8vo, 26 cm, xi, [1], 154 pp, 56 ills. From the introduction - " In the fifteenth century, the First History Bible, or Eerste Hisloriebijbel, was one of the most popular books in the North Netherlands. Its text consisted basically of a juxtaposition of the Bible with Petrus Comestor's twelfth century Hist…oria Scholastica, executed so that each passage from the Bible immediately preceded the relevant commentary on that passage from the Historia Scholastica. Thirty-six manuscripts (see Appendix I) of this text are extant, and at least twelve other manuscripts are known to have existed, for the text has been identified on twelve single-folio fragments. Of these thirty-six manuscripts, fourteen received illustrations; the remainder are simply written copies of the text. Contemporary colophons reveal the approximate period of production of the illustrated exemplars: the earliest manuscript (Brussels, Bibliothèque royale, Ms. 9018-23) is dated 1431; and the latest (London, British Library, Add. Ms. 16951) is dated 1473-74. Thus, their production spans the middle two quarters of the century." Very Good in slightly fingersoiled dustwrapper.

From the preface - "This publication commemorates an exhibition organized by the Mary and Leigh Block Museum at Northwestern University and presented in January 2001. Although in the past decade a lar…ge number of highly successful exhibitions have been devoted to manuscript illumination of different periods, there has never been an exhibition dealing with the rise of the appreciation of manuscript illumination in the modern age. By providing the prehistory of the contemporary interest in illumination, our exhibition seeks to address troubling questions that have gone largely unanswered for audiences of modern-day exhibitions: Why is this illumination cut from the page? Why is this page cut from the book? Why is this illumination pasted in another book? Or made into a collage? By whom? When? What about fakes and forgeries? Reproductions? Facsimiles? Remakes? Can we tell the difference? Were 'they' aware of the difference? Many of these questions confront head-on the modem anxiety that museums - and, as a result, their public - sometimes display concerning the status of the 'original.'" Laminated illustrated wrappers, folio, 30 cm, 319, [1] pp ; colour ills. 16 items. From the preface - "The sixteen manuscripts in this catalogue contribute to the history of the first millennium of the Bible in the Latin West. The project for a catalogue like this is, in itself, almost unimaginable in the twenty-first century. T…here has probably never before been a trade or auction catalogue devoted exclusively to codices (not fragments) of the Bible - or indeed of any other type of medieval manuscript -of this early date. To compose the present catalogue, we were able to assemble a selection of exceptional manuscripts from one of the great European private collections of medieval manuscripts and art at the highest level. Distinguished for its unusual focus on monastic study, the collection is especially rich in early manuscripts." Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Rings are at once the most intimate forms of jewelry and personal forms of art. This book focuses on approximately fifty rings from a distinguished private collection, tracing the ways that rings of the Middle Ages and Renaissance came to be meaningful. From the mine to the modern collection… and through the forge, the goldsmith's shop, and the hands of successive generations of owners, these rings underwent journeys that lent them multifaceted and often multilayered resonances. This book explores these pathways and examines how people throughout history have interacted with multiple aspects of these small but remarkably complex objects. An introduction by Diana Scarisbrick supplements this biography of rings by investigating five prominent ring enthusiasts whose lives, interests, and collections have played prominent roles in the development of the modern appraisal of rings, while providing a chronological sequence for the rings in this book. A catalog of the rings, including their technical details, accompanies the text. Rings are at once the most intimate forms of jewelry and personal forms of art.
