Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. 'Mike Heron, as part of the Incredible String Band, changed the way I looked at music. Read it!' Billy Connolly'Mike Heron's lyrics always sparkled with wit and warmth and his prose is a delightful continuation. The book evokes a smoky, unheated eccentric Edinburgh that was a crucible for so much creativity.' Joe Boyd, author of White BicyclesThis singular book offers two harmonising memoirs of music making in the 1960s. Mike Heron for the first time writes vividly of his formative years in dour, Presbyterian Edinburgh. Armed with a love of Buddy Holly, Fats Domino and Hungarian folk music, he plays in school cloakrooms, graduates to rock, discovers the joy of a folk audience, starts writing songs, tries to talk to girls, wishes he was a Beatnik all while training as a reluctant accountant. When asked to join Robin Williamson and Clive Palmer, the Incredible String Band are formed - and their wildly innovative, astounding music became indelibly linked with the latter Sixties.Andrew Greig was a frustrated provincial schoolboy when he heard their songs. It changed everything. Undaunted by a lack of experience and ability, he formed a band in their image. Fate & Ferret populated back-country Fife with Pan, nymphs and Apollo, met the String Band and caught the fish lorry to London to hang around Joe Boyd's Witchseason office, watching at the fringes of the blooming Underground scene. It was forty years later that he and Mike became friends. These entwined stories will delight anyone who has loved the Incredible String Band; and their differing portraits of that hopeful, erratic and stubborn stumble towards the life that is ours will strike a chord with everyone. A dual memoir written in tandem by Mike Heron, a founder member of the iconic sixties folk group The Incredible String Band and one of their greatest fans, bestselling author and winner of the Saltire Prize, Andrew Greig Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Add to basketCondition: Very Good. Original Original typed finished manuscript, foolscap paper, probably for a rock music press article by rock music writer Rick Sanders. 7 typed pages, recto only. About 2500+ words. Dated on first page in Rick Sanders hand 'April 6th 1970.' Evidently done just after their notorious multi-media gig at the Roundhouse in London, it starts 'Were you pleased with it? Yes, it was very good. At the end, you know, they were cheering.it's hard to tell.there were a couple of first-night things to be sorted out.' It appears to have been a 3 hour show with over 12 participants inc dancers, Rick asks 'Is pantomime still the word you would use for it?' Mike says 'we wanted total entertainment. visuals, sound.we kind of liked the idea of pantomime, you know the God Pan to mime.' There is in-depth discussion of this project. Also mention of life in rural Scotland, John Peel, the coming American tour, Julie Felix, a film that they had made for the BBC which hadn't been shown (possibly for Omnibus ) he notes they have about three albums worth of songs ready at this time. He also mentions the Electra label and admiration for 'Spirit in the Sky' and 'Morrison Hotel' (The Doors.) London phone number scribbled at margin and a small calculation and some typed corrections. Very good. Rick Sanders (1947- 2023 ) was a talented journalist, musician, singer-songwriter and painter, who made his name as a rock writer in the late 1960s and early 70s. He worked first on Intro magazine, Nova and then as assistant editor of Beat Instrumental, interviewing major figures including Pink Floyd, Jim Morrison, Fairport Convention and Leonard Cohen. He also went on to edit the London pages of Rolling Stone magazine. Rick was also lead guitarist and a founder member of the poetry-music band the Occasional Word, whose album, The Year of the Great Leap Sideways, was released on John PeelÕs Dandelion Records in 1969. He played on other releases on the label including Bridget St JohnÕs first albums, and Mike Hart Bleeds. Peel described him as the best 12-string bottleneck guitarist he had ever heard. Provenance- Chiswick Auctions, autographs and memorabilia 31/1/26 Very good.…
