Trade paperback. Condition: Very good. Signed by author. First edition. First printing [stated]. Trade paperback (US). Glued binding. 117, [3] p. Illustrations (most in color). Index of Magazines. The Rev. Peter Gwillim Kreitler is a cultural historian, television talk show host, author, businessman and environmental educator. H…is most recent book is United We Stand: Flying the American Flag. Published in conjunction with the Smithsonian Institution, this collection of magazine covers from July 4th, 1942 (the 1st Independence Day after Pearl Harbour), all featuring the American flag, is an amazing and moving testament to the patriotism and spirit of the day as well as an enduring (and hypnotic) visual history. Includes short explanatory text on how the magazines rallied to the cause, short quotes from the sources of the day (magazines, other), and then a gallery of the covers. After the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 nearly 300 magazines took part in a United We Stand campaign that resulted in each of the participating periodicals having the American Flag featured on their covers. The idea for this concerted action came from Paul MacNamara. The focus of this book is on the covers published in July 1942, although a few later covers are included. 1942 was also the year that the Pledge of Alligence was officially recognized by Congress.
