Collection of a series of articles about the construction of the New York subway and elevated railway systems, written as they were being built. This work was commissioned by the editors of Engineering News in order to have experts explain to the general public the nature of the work and the magnitude of the effort to build the new mass transit system which cost as much as the entire Panama Canal and resulted in a system larger than all the other existing systems in the world combined. The first part of the book, by Mr. Lavis, describes the construction of the subways. The second piece, by Mr. Griest, focuses on the construction of the elevated railways. An invaluable piece of Americana and New York history, not to mention the history of engineering, mass transit and railway transportation. Illustrated throughout with detailed diagrams and black and white photos. Scarce in the original.
