The first part of the book, by Mr. Lavis, describes the construction of the subways. The second piece, by Mr. Griest, focuses on the construction of the elevated railways. An invaluable piece of Americana and New York history, not to mention the history of engineering, mass transit and railway transportation. Illustrated throughout with detailed diagrams and black and white photos. Scarce in the original.
