Hardback. Condition: New. The book considers the importance of plants in Tolkien's conception of Middle-earth. It develops the theme that Middle-earth is our own world - and will awaken the reader to the connection between the plants of Tolkien's legendarium and those growing in our gardens and local natural areas of the Northern Hemisphere. It also demonstrates the connection between the various plant communities of Middle-earth and the elven and human cultures that occupy them, including those environments degraded by warfare, industrialization or pollution. The heart of the book is an alphabetical listing, arranged by common names, of all of the plants mentioned in Tolkien's legendarium; for each of these plants the treatment will include: 1) common and scientific name, along with an indication of the family to which the plant belongs, 2) a brief quote from one of Tolkien's works in which the plant is referenced, 3) a discussion of the significance of the plant in the context of Tolkien's legendarium, 4) the etymology relating to both English common name and the scientific name, and where relevant, the name in one or more of the languages of Middle-earth, 5) a brief statement of the plant's distribution and ecology (along with mention of major species), 6) economic uses, both traditional and current, and 7) an easy-to-understand description of the plant. The book provides guidelines to the use of plant descriptions, and the few technical terms used are carefully defined. Many plants are illustrated by original artwork, in the style of a woodcut print. The description along with an identification key, when used with the illustrations, allow easy identification of each plant, adding to the reader's understanding and appreciation of Tolkien's works. A glossary of descriptive terms is also included.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear, chipping, closed tears and loss to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners rubbed and bruised with loss, blue cloth of covers faded where loss of jacket, not price clipped (30s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a reasonable copy for its age. 245pp, illustrated. In 1937, on the night of her engagement to the Marquess of Donegall, Sheilah Graham met F. Scott Fitzgerald (1896-1940), at a party in Hollywood. Graham (1904-88), a British born journalist, broke off her engagement, and until Fitzgerald had a fatal heart attack in her apartment in 1940, the two writers lived the fervid, sometimes violent affair that is memorialized here with unprecedented intimacy. When they met, Fitzgerald's fame had waned. He battled crippling alcoholism while writing screenplays to support his daughter and institutionalized wife Zelda. Graham's star, however, was rising, to the point where she became Hollywood's highest-paid, best read gossip columnist. But if Fitzgerald had lived out his 'crack-up' in public, Graham kept her demons secret, such as that she believed herself to be 'a fascinating fake who pulled the wool over Hollywood's eyes'. Most poignantly, she keenly felt her lack of education, and Fitzgerald rose to the occasion. He became her passionate tutor, guiding her through a curriculum of his own design, a college of one. Graham loved him the more for it, writing the book as a tribute. Quite a scarce book. Jacket by Dorothy Judd (illustrator).…

"The tripartite catalogue Sonskeek [sp] ''72 arose from the notes and photos we made of a project that we executed during the period November ''71 - June ''72. What was the starting point of the project? Of all the Sonsbeek exhibitions in ''49- ''52- ''55- ''59 and ''66 one could or one can find back all the sculptures; although not in the original place, in the park, they are to be seen somewhere. Yet the transiency of the projects and objects as exposed during the manifestation ''Sonsbeek buiten de perken'' for us was a reason to trace back what happened to these projects and objects. Doing this we considered ourselves as visitors who came after the closing of the manifestation. We visited the original place of the object/project, made photographs and described it and did so with the present place as well. E.g. from the gigantic wedge by Ronald Bladen at the place in park Sonsbeek hardly anything could be found, except a slight difference in colour of the pavement. The wedge itself we discovered in pieces against the wall of a shed of a firm in Arnhem. Most of the projects and objects we also found back in totally different state: at rubbish dumps, on heaps of scrap- iron, dismantled and packed in boxes, in peoples homes on the cupboard. In some cases nothing was to be found back. We sent a stencil to the 35 filmmakers asking them to send a photo and a description of the present place of their films. Description and photo were their part in our project, the original place always being the place at the lawn where in a tent the films have been shown, during the manifestation. From some filmers we didn?t get an answer within a certain period, then the second card is dropped out. Some artists played a part by the publication they got in one of both Sonsbeek cataloques. When their project had a relation with a location, we visited it and made a photo, if not, we reproduced the concerning pages out of the cataloques. The definite form of the three booklets as they now appear, is the result of collecting and combining the 360 cards on one side a photo, on the other side the descri.…
