The true stories in this book were first told in a thirty-part series in the Hull Target weekly newspaper. The articles, which appeared under th…e title Hessle Road Corner, covered a variety of historic topics which bubbled out of the fantastic experiences of the people in this unique community. Target readers responded with amazing enthusiasm and provided further tales and pictures. The outcome of this personal contact was that each topic was enriched and elaborated into the fourteen chapters of this book.The author's research commitment to the life of the Hessle Roaders dates back to 1974. In that year he began his on-going photo-documentary work which has been shown in over twenty solo exhibitions in the UK and USA. Ten years later, he had his first book published (with sketches by Gary Sargeant). This was based upon in-depth interviews and archive research.The diverse chapters in Good Old Hessle Road include Victorian midwives; a trawler hero of the Great War; herring girls on their travels around Great Britain; the 1953 Edgar Wallace tragedy in the Humber; the STAND campaign for a Hull Fish Dock Heritage Park; the famous Cloggie Walsh; a dynamic Methodist chapel; Kitty the Humber motor launch; a fisherman's superstition about pigs; the trawler Mohican wrecked on volcanic ash in Iceland; the sisterhood of net-braiders; the Hull trawler Warwick Deeping sunk by five German destroyers in 1940; and the incredible tales of Dillinger - the dare-devil trawlerman of Hessle Road. The stories are accompanied by over eighty illustrations.In essence, this book gives the reader an insight into the life of one of Britain's most vibrant communities, whose sons battled against the elements in the world's most dangerous job trawling the Arctic waters. The book is in good, if no very good, condition and is protected by a clear plastic cover. Page corners are sharp and pages themselves are clean and unmarked.
