Paperback. Condition: New. Regimental histories abound, but few can be as stirring as this story of the fortunes of the famous Yorkshire-based Green Howards. Raised in 1688 in response to a call for loyal troops, the Green Howards have maintained their tradition of loyalty over the past 300 years winning many superb battle honours. Their history reflects that of the British Army as there is hardly a major campaign that this Regiment has not been involved in; the French Wars of 1697-1793, the American War of Independence, Crimean War, First and Second World Wars, service in Suez, Malaya, Northern Ireland, peacekeeping operations in Bosnia and the war in the Gulf. This fine book brings the story of one of Britain's finest regiments right up to date.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Revised Edition. 276 pages, several photographs & illustrated maps. Geoffrey Powell recounts the dramatic Allied attempt to seize a chain of key bridges in the Netherlands in September 1944, an ambitious plan intended to force a crossing of the Rhine before German forces could recover from their defeats in France. He describes the optimism in Allied headquarters, the airborne drops by British, American, and Polish troops, and the unexpectedly fierce German resistance including SS Panzer units that had regrouped far more quickly than intelligence predicted. Powell follows the heroic but ultimately doomed defence of the Arnhem bridge, the painfully slow advance of ground forces along a single vulnerable road, and the suffering endured by Dutch civilians caught in the fighting. The book captures both the courage of the airborne troops and the heavy casualties they sustained in one of the most daring but tragic operations of the war. Original burgandy cloth, gilt lettered. With a dustwrapper. Contents clean. Size: 16 x 24 cms. Category: Varied Books; New Arrivals; ISBN: 0850523524. ISBN/EAN: 9780850523522. Digest. Condition: Good+. First Edition, 1st Printing. A nice copy of the Winter 1950 issue of the British science fiction magazine Science-Fantasy. This issue was the the second and last publication under the editorship of Walter Gillings. Science-Fantasy was published during the 1950s to accompany New Worlds magazine. In the late 1940s, Gillings had produced three volumes of his first science fiction venture "Fantasy" before it failed. As a result, he was left with a substantial amount of stories purchased with the intention of publication. In 1950, Nova brought on Gillings as its editor of their new magazine, Science-Fantasy. With him came the inventory of stories from "Fantasy." After only two issues (Summer and Winter 1950) Gillings was replaced by New Worlds editor John Carnell. This copy is in remarkable condition for its age and scarcity. Cover's have some light wear and the staples have corroded over time leaving its stain on the inner margins. A soft vertical crease permeates most of the 96 numbered pages paginated [i: inner cover advertisements], [1], 2-96, [97: inner back cover advertisement for the Fantasy Book Centre]. Binding is solid with no loose pages. Pages are clean and unmarked. A good+ copy that beats many seen recently come to market. Powell, Turner, and Ernst (illustrator).
