Bordeaux, impr. de Gounouilhou, 1896 ; 1 vol. in-8 (24 x 16 cm), 32 pp., 6 planches comportant 12 phototypies, broché, couverture imprimée, marge des feuillets discrètement jaunie, cachet ex-libris du Dr. Albert Carrier au titre, petite étiquette arrondie de classement sur le plat supérieu…r ; très bon état (exemplaire enrichi de deux petites coupures de presse datées de 1893 sur le sujet). Seule édition, rare, de cette monographie recherchée en particulier pour son iconographie. Il s'agit semble-t-il de la première monographie à renfermer des reproductions photographiques de patients myxœdémateux avant et après un traitement hormonal. Les photographies sont de G. Pradeaux. Les premiers traitements par extraits thyroïdiens réalisés chez l'homme ont eu lieu en 1891 (injections) et en 1892 (traitement per os). Flourens, pharmacien, possédait à Bordeaux un laboratoire pharmaceutique qui fut l'un des quelques laboratoires français autorisés par décret à produire des "extraits organiques", selon la méthode de Brown-Séquard. Il devint l'un des principaux fournisseurs de pastilles d'extraits thyroïdiens, avec Chaix & Rémy, Burroughs-Wellcome et Merck. Bien que cette monographie, basée sur des observations cliniques (recueillies essentiellement dans les hôpitaux de Bordeaux), réponde aux critères scientifiques de l'époque, cette publication présenterait aujourd'hui un problème de conflit d'intérêt. Flourens, après avoir exposé et illustré "les effets salutaires de la médication thyroïdienne dans le goitre, la maladie de Basedow et le myxoedème", recommande le traitement sous forme de pastilles et signale même qu'il a créé à Bordeaux un laboratoire à cet effet.
