Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This title follows the travels of the author, Fiona Ledger, during her days in the 1980s and 1990s as a correspondent for the World Service in Africa. She describes the people she meets in hairdressers and hotel bedrooms, in shops and community halls. There are funny descriptions of lecherous old men and the pompous foreign press, of a terrible car accident where a broken arm is mistaken for a dislocated one and a charm school in the heart of conservative Zambia. There are pompous colonels; a decrepit lady in Zambia who pines for the old days; an unfaithful lover; andd a paranoid airhostess. The book is also about the limitations of news and current affairs in conveying the world we live in; it's an antitdote to the headlines that dehumanize people, by reducing Africa to acres of big eyed starving babies and invisible tyrants. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.…

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. What's Englishness all about? What are the English about? This question has vexed many people, including the English and the French at different times. Being English is an elusive quality that covers traits that range from stiff upper lips to clergymen with no backbone, or religion. The English are supposed to be polite and reserved, witty and well-mannered or raving drunken hooligans depending on who you talk too. This book looks at all of the myths, all of the stereotypes and all of the things, good and bad, that people have had to say about the English. Drawing extensively on quotes from famous commentators, this is a witty, and illustrated, introduction to the idea of 'Englishness'. Full of examples of English humour, cartoons and classic wit, it is the perfect introduction for the newcomer. What's Englishness all about? What are the English about? This question has vexed many people, including the English and the French at different times. This book looks at the myths, the stereotypes and the things, good and bad, that people have had to say about the English. It draws on quotes from famous commentators.
