"William Cullen (1710-1790) was a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment. He was a friend of Adam Smith and David Hume but his achievements have not been so well recognised. Cullen was a great teacher who explored the relationship between medicine and science in a spirit of liberal inquiry and he played a major role in establishing the Edinburgh of his day as the world's foremost medical centre. He attracted many students from overseas, and the medical schools and institutions founded by his pupils set the pattern for medicine in North America. . Cullen was born in Hamilton and educated at Glasgow, where he became Professor of Medicine before moving to Edinburgh to take up a sequence of professorships at the University. Like a true lad o' pairts he became First Physician to the King in Scotland and President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In addition he was a founder member of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. This book follows an exhibition and a symposium held to commemorate the 200th anniversary of Cullen's death and restores Cullen to his rightful place in both the Scottish Enlightenment and the history of medicine and science." Unclipped jacket in very good with slight sunnng to the spine. Book has gilt titles to spine and is in excellent condition with no inscriptions.…

Ornithologists now work on a wider geographical basis, and these handbooks covers the whole of the Western Paleartic, which includes all Europe together with the Middle East to Turkey, Iraq, and Jordon, and Africa south to about 19 degrees North. Within the nine volumes are: Descriptions of over 770 species of birds, illustrations of each species in the form of specially commissioned colour plates. Colour Plates of eggs, black and white illustrations and many text figures showing such features as display postures, flight views, voice sonagrams, and melograms and annual cycles. A bibliography and indexes in each volume. This complete set is an indispensible work of reference, both for the professional scientist and for the ever growing body of amatuer ornithologists whose range of interests is expanding every year. Please note these books are comprehensive and are large volumes and when packaged together are packaged in a proper box/case to ship, therefore postage/shipping may increase from listed price depending on final destination. Please do contact to get a shipping quotation. An amazing collection of nine books that have been put together by so many talented individuals. The perfect reference for anyone who has an interest in birds.…
