Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Mosaics in Britannia provides an authoritative overview of Romano-British mosaics, including how they were made and maintained, how the craft was organised, the geometric designs and the subject matter, source and significance of the figured pavements. Also considered is the mosaics place wi…thin the buildings they adorned, and what they tell us about the social dynamics of the residence and baths. The book ends with the fate of mosaics in the late Roman period and thereafter, including their recording upon rediscovery and their display. Although Romano-British pictorial mosaics seldom attain the artistic brilliance of those around the Mediterranean, they often have sophisticated content. Several demonstrate a good knowledge of classical literature, arguably more so than most other provinces, which is perhaps surprising to those who have assumed that Roman Britain was a backwater at the extreme edge of the Roman Empire. This book surveys Romano-British mosaicstheir craft, design, themes, and role within buildings. It highlights their literary sophistication and social significance, traces their late Roman decline, and follows their rediscovery, challenging assumptions that Britain was a cultural backwater. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Since the completion of the four volumes of _Roman Mosaics of Britain_ covering all of Britain to 2010, more mosaics have been discovered and research has continued. The present volume brings the catalogue up-to-date to July 2023, while the first part is devoted to various aspects of mosaic,… including subject matter, context, design and manufacture. This is a lengthy overview of mosaic research, which could only be discussed on a regional basis in the previous volumes. The principal finds are the amazing figured mosaics, from Boxford, West Berkshire and Ketton, Rutland, arguably the most important discoveries in over 60 years. However, there are also numerous mosaics from other sites, illustrated along with building plans where possible, including re-excavation of known mosaics and historic recordings that have re-emerged since 2010. An overview of research and finds of Roman mosaics in Britain, updating the earlier corpus volumes from 2010 to the present time. The volume incorporates all new discoveries and re-excavations since 2010 including the important figured mosaics from Boxford and Ketton. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Buch. Condition: Neu. Neuware - This is a supplementary volume to the corpus of Romano-British mosaics published by the Society of Antiquaries of London between 2002 and 2010 (Volumes I-IV). It is in two parts: an overview, discussing various aspects of Romano-British mosaic study with special emphasis on recent research and dis…coveries, while the second part is a catalogue of new mosaic discoveries, re-excavation and new research of known pavements, in the same format as previous volumes. Volume V includes the recently discovered figurative mosaics at Ketton, Rutland, and Boxford, Berks, which are regarded as perhaps the most significant examples revealed for 60 years. Also included is the mausoleum uncovered in Southwark in 2023.The corpus is an outstanding work of scholarship which has become the standard reference work for Roman mosaics in Britain. The authors have gathered all the known sources and references to the mosaics, with many illustrated through paintings and drawings made in situ. These are works of art in their own right.
