In contrast, the Latin word 'fantasia' has, since antiquity, referred to an apparition or the ability to imagine something that could be equally an object, an image,…or a concept. This tension prompts further inquiry into the interrelations and differences between the experience of tangible objects (their perception and handling) and the creation of new objects (their conception and formation). What correlations exist between object fantasies, the self-consciousness of subjects, and the concrete and imagined conditions of human beings' social lives By addressing this question, this interdisciplinary book opens new perspectives in the field of object studies. ; Nach modernem Verständnis bezeichnet 'Objekt' einen real existenten, räumlich begrenzten und funktional bestimmten Gegenstand. Im Gegensatz dazu verweist 'Fantasia' seit der Antike auf eine Erscheinung oder auf das Vermögen, sich etwas vorzustellen, was Objekt, Bild und Konzept sein kann. Diese Spannung fordert dazu heraus, die Bezüge und Divergenzen zwischen der Erfahrung realer Objekte, ihrer Wahrnehmung und Handhabung, und der Kreation neuer Objekte, ihrer Konzeption und Gestaltung, zu untersuchen. This book traces the origination, development, and later history of church treasures, and explores the form and function of these objects of memory. They were a source of wonder for their contemporaries and remain so today, albeit for quite different reasons. Indeed, our fascination relates primarily to their aesthetic qualities and the meaning that we assign to them. Dealing also with this paradigm shift, this study opens up new paths toward a real archeology of current historiographical and museum practices. This book traces the origins, economic development, and later history of church treasures, and explores the forms and function of these objects of memory and wonder.
