O'Connor, a wealthy gauger (customs official) and moneylender, was the former lover of Marie De Roux, later Manning. He was murdered by Marie and her husband, Frederick George Manning. The motivation was greed. The case attracted a good deal of public attention and became known as the "Bermondsey Horror." Eventually apprehended, the husband and wife were hanged on November 13, 1849. This execution was the first time a husband and wife had been executed together in England since 1700. Dickens witnessed the execution and wrote an account of it that was published in the Times. The behavior of the crowd repulsed him, and he became a leading advocate for ending public executions. (The campaign was eventually successful in 1868. London: W.M. Clark, 1849. (illustrator).
