"Lewis seeks in Mere Christianity to help us see religion with fresh eyes, as a radical faith whose adherents might be likened to an underground group gathering in a war zone, a pla…ce where evil seems to have the upper hand, to hear messages of hope from the other side." - Kathleen Norris, from the Foreword. "One of the most popular and beloved introductions to Christian faith ever written, Mere Christianity has sold millions of copies worldwide. The book brings together Lewis's legendary broadcast talks of the war years, talks in which he set out simply to "explain and defend the belief that has been common to nearly all Christians at all times." Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis provides an unequaled opportunity for believers and nonbelievers alike to hear a powerful, rational case for the Christian faith. It is a collection of scintillating brilliance that remains strikingly fresh for the modern reader and at the same time confirms C.S. Lewis's reputation as one of the leading writers and thinkers of our age." - from the rear outer cover. "I read Lewis for comfort and pleasure many years ago, and a glance into the books revives my old admiration." - John Updike. "C.S. Lewis is the ideal persuader for the half-convinced, for the good man who would like to be a Christian but finds his intellect getting in the way." - Anthony Burgess, New York Times Book Review. Prince, Michael (cover photograph); Chillingworth, John (author photograph) (illustrator).

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. At the age of 22, John Chillingworth was the youngest member of the 'star' team of photographic journalists on the magazine. He worked alongside many other great photographers including Bert Hardy, Kurt Hutton, Felix Man, Bill Brandt, Thurston Hopkins, Grace Robertson, and Leonard McCombe. E…ditorially the magazine was liberal, anti-Fascist and populist. It covered everything from politics, through to sport, fashion, music, theatre and film, as well as picture stories of everyday life both in the UK and abroad. Chillingworth stayed with Picture Post for seven years producing a vast range of photo stories of a very high quality. Encouraged by the legendary picture magazine editor Tom Hopkinson, he learned to combine 'story-telling' images with the written word and worked with some of the finest magazine journalists of the age. Hopkinson, described Chillingworth as one of his great successes. Although John Chillingworth's images are still reproduced in publications around the world, this is his first monograph and features a wide range of photographs, primarily taken during his Picture Post years. The book is introduced by Matthew Butson, Vice President of Hulton Archive, whose vast experience of the Picture Post archive stretches back almost 30 years. Picture Post, the UK's best known illustrated magazine was launched 75 years ago in October 1938 and ran for almost twenty years until 1957. It was massively popular and at its peak had a circulation of just under two million copies. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
