Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. VIVE TU RECUERDO: LIVING TRADITIONS IN THE MEXICAN DAYS OF THE DEAD (Museum of Cultural History, UCLA Monograph Series Number 17), published in conjunction with an exhibit at the Museum of Cultural History Gallery, Haines Hall, UCLA, Sept. 15 - Nov. 7, 1982, by Robert V. Childs and Pa…tricia B. Altman, bilingual text with Spanish translation by Hernan Quinones, softcover, probable first edition, richly illustrated with color and B/W photos and other illustrations, 1982. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition with no tears, dog ears, or marks. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor remainder. Two-staple binding in fine condition. The illustrated wraps are in near fine condition but for fingerprint smudges and slight wear along bottom edge of rear cover. 11 x 8 ½, 64 pages, 9 ounces XX [From the introduction] Dias de los Muertos (Days of the Dead) are the annual Mexican observances of the Catholic Feast of All Saints and All Souls Day on November 1st and 2nd. The distinctive character of these holidays in Mexico is the result of syncretism between a medieval Spanish European tradition honoring souls of the dead and a pre-Columbian Indian cult of the dead. In contrast with most of the Catholic world which tends toward relatively simple memorial services, Mexico has developed an elaborate set of customs and rituals around these feast days. In the states of Oaxaca and Michoacan it has become one of the most important local fiestas. Souls of dead family members are invited back to their homes to join in the feast. Altars with offerings of food, candy, toys, candles, flowers, and incense are set up in the home for the returning spirits and graves in the cemetery are cleaned and decorated with flowers. Although the Fiesta revolves around death, it is neither grim nor macabre. Rather it is a warm and friendly family reunion of the living and deceased.

Paperback. Condition: New. Birds of Aruba, Bonaire, and CuraÇao is the essential guide for anyone traveling to those islands. It showcases the more than 280 species seen on Aruba, Bonaire, and CuraÇao and provides descriptions of and directions to the best places to bird, from the famous white sand beaches to hidden watering hol…es to the majestic national parks. Aruba, Bonaire, and CuraÇao-the "ABCs"-located in the southwestern Caribbean, not far from Venezuela, share fascinating ecological features with the West Indies as well as the South American mainland, making birding on the islands unique. The identification portion of the book features endemic subspecies such as the Brown-throated Parakeet; a wide variety of wintering North American migrants; spectacular restricted-range northern South American species such as the Yellow-shouldered Parrot, Bare-eyed Pigeon, Troupial, Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, and Yellow Oriole; and West Indian species including the Pearly-eyed Thrasher and Caribbean Elaenia. Colorful introductory sections provide readers with a brief natural history of the islands, detailing the geography, geology, and general ecology of each. In the site guide that follows, Jeffrey V. Wells and Allison Childs Wells share their more than two decades of experience in the region, providing directions to the best birding spots. Clear, easy-to-read maps accompany each site description, along with notes about the species that birders are likely to find. The identification section is arranged in classic field guide format and offers vivid descriptions of each bird, along with tips on how to identify them by sight and sound. The accounts also include current status and seasonality, if relevant, and common names in English, Dutch, and Papiamento, often inspired by the unique voices of the birds, such as the "chibichibi" (Bananaquit) and "choco" (Burrowing Owl). The accompanying color plates feature the beautiful work of illustrator Robert Dean. The final section, on conservation, raises awareness about threats facing the birds and the habitats on which they rely and summarizes conservation initiatives and needs, offering recommendations for each island.
