Era accusato di essere il capo spirituale di una congiura contro il governo spagnolo, di preparare uninsurrezione, un regime popolare, lalleanza con i Turchi, di propagare inaudite eresie. Il frate era Tommaso Campanella e aveva appena compiuto il trentunesimo anno; tradotto a Napoli in catene, avrebbe subito atroci torture e ventotto anni di reclusione spesso durissima, sopportati con inflessibile tempra. In condizioni disumane, superando ogni stento e umiliazione, egli impiegherà quella segregazione dal mondo per comporre opere filosofiche di vigoria novatrice, scritti politici di appassionata attualità, poesie intense e vibranti, stupende lettere indirizzate ai dotti e ai potenti della terra. Dellesperienza drammatica del carcere ci restano documenti suoi di prima mano, dalla deposizione rilasciata subito dopo larresto alle difese composte con sottigliezza dialettica e smisurata dottrina, fino al racconto, ormai disteso e attenuato, che ebbe a redigere dopo ventanni di reclusione. E ci restano altresì i verbali degli interrogatori e degli atroci supplizi, nei quali si esalta il contrasto fra il gelido legalismo dei giudici e uninvitta resistenza morale, che non si piega neppure sotto la tortura « enorme » inflitta per quaranta ore consecutive. Quella che qui integralmente si pubblica - criticamente accertata, annotata, tradotta - è una testimonianza eloquente e definitiva, resa soprattutto a se stesso, della dignità delluomo e della sua non rinunciabile libertà. Dopo II processo di Giordano Bruno, pubblicato dalla Salerno Editrice nel 1993, questo studio di Firpo appare per le cure di Eugenio Canone, con recuperi di materiali nuovi rispetto a quelli già in parte anticipati ne II supplizio di Tommaso Campanella (id., 1985), a suggellare il dittico dedicato ai due grandi protagonisti del pensiero moderno.
