Ever since he was a boy, he has loved putting together little A6-size zines. His stencil-printed Plim came out in 1969, followed by more zines at April Verlag, a publishing house that Bruhin and Hannes Bossert ran jointly from 1969 to 1972. Some thirty years later, in 1998, 40 zines were printed on a Brother fax machine under the title Vierhundertfuenfundfuenfzig-seelendorf Editionen. And his 2014 series Scheissegedichte (Shit Verses) featured word sequences, palindromes (ekle meteorkroete melke), typewriter art and pixel portraits alongside drawings of electrical sockets with curlicue pigs tails and scatological couplets, e.g. for a rather free rhyming translation:Shit stinks and poop steams,the Romans shat on wooden beamsShits formed by the assand normed by Brussels brass.When the shit hits the wallit doesnt bounce back like a ball.Shits the talk of the townand soon gets renown.Bruhin designed his New Years greetings as 24- to 32- page zines featuring samples of his current work. Bruhins Dämonen verraten einen tiefen Sinn für das Wesen der Suggestion.Wie aber käme ein heutiger Dämon daher Ursprünglich jener freischwebende Geist, der Lebens- und kosmische Energien verkörpert, wurde er mit den Jahrhunderten ins Innere der Lebewesen verlegt, vor allem des Menschen, und mit dem Bösen assoziiert: Ein Ungeist, der in die Dinge schlüpft, um sie aufzupeitschen, ihnen Krankheiten und Übel anzuhängen, sie zu zerrütten und die Vernichtungskräfte des Schicksals auf sie zu lenken.Bruhin scheint nun den Dämon auf spielerische Weise rehabilitieren zu wollen, indem er ihn als idealtypischen Bewohner der Postmoderne zeigt: furchterregend und witzig zugleich. Dass er als Gesicht kenntlich wird, erstaunt wenig. Bruhins Versuchsreihen, seien sie in ihrer Anlage noch so abstrakt, münden stets in vergnügliche Anschaulichkeit. Seine Pixelwesen kommen also trinkfest, ironiefähig, oft sogar gut gelaunt und mit Freude am Herzeigen ihrer Absonderlichkeiten daher. Je länger man zwischen ihnen hin und her springt, desto wundersamer verkörpert ihre Mimik Zustände zwischen sanfter Entrücktheit, Feixlust und spukhafter Raserei: blinzelnde Fettaugen auf der Ursuppe. Es sind Sonderfüssler und Unförmlinge darunter. Sicher, hier grinsen sie, lassen die Warzen spriessen, rülpsen und sind mit andersgelbem Schleim besprengt.
