Jahrhunderts fanden in der Stadt Trier, in Kurtrier und im Gebiet der Reichsabtei St. Maximin europaweit kommentierte Hexenverfolgungen mit Hunderten Opfern statt. In seinem Tractatus de confessionibus maleficorum et sagarum (1589, 1591, 1596) legitimierte Weihbischof Peter Binsfeld die Prozesse und forderte deren Ausweitung. Der über Arenberg, Mainz und Köln geflüchtete katholische Kontroverstheologe Cornelius Loos aus Gouda wandte sich 1592 radikal gegen Binsfelds Argumente. In seiner anti-dämonologischen Schrift De vera et falsa magia formulierte er schärfste Kritik an Hexenglaube, Prozess- und Folterpraxis, inspiriert von der Schrift des Arztes Johann Wier (Weyer) und gestützt auf den Kanon Episcopi: Dämonen besaßen keine körperliche Präsenz; Pakt, Buhlschaft, Hexenflug, Hexensabbat, Schadenzauber existierten nicht. Der päpstliche Nuntius stufte die Kampfschrift als häretisch ein, die Drucklegung wurde gestoppt. Vor einem Ketzertribunal musste Loos in St. Maximin seinen Thesen abschwören. In Brüssel setzte er seine Aktionen mit Predigten gegen den Hexenglauben fort, geriet in das Visier des Hexenjägers Jan Bacx, kam erneut ins Gefängnis, wurde freigelassen. 1597 entzog der Tod ihn einem dritten Verfahren. Als Warnung vor den Argumenten des patronus sagarum Loos überlieferte der Jesuit Martin Delrio (1600) dessen Widerruf und sorgte so ungewollt für deren Fortleben.Die 1886 in der Stadtbibliothek Trier entdeckten, beiden ersten Teile der Schrift des Cornelius Loos liegen jetzt in der von Othon Scholer ( 2015) vorbereiteten, kommentierten und übersetzten Edition vor. Die Einleitung stellt die Trierer Ereignisse, Leben und Werk des Cornelius Loos, seinen Traktat sowie dessen Rezeption vor.
