Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Dust Jacket. 1st. (CAD) Presumed 1st edition. No markings, Fine; no dust jacket as published. Hardcover, [96]pp, colour and B&W reproductions and photos of artworks. Borrowing its title from Roman philosopher Lucretius in his epic poem dedicated to Epicurean philosophy, this exhibition catalogue assumes a multi-linear and non-directional curatorial approach to several individual artistic practices. While the artists surveyed share an interest in strikingly Modernist forms and structures, they employ surrealist wit to repurpose clichéd forms from our everyday urban environment and popular culture into extra-ordinary aesthetic tropes that challenge a stable understanding of both art and our modernity. The artists include Kim Kennedy Austin, Andrew Dadson, Sarah Dobai, Rodney Graham, Alexander Gutke, Sofia Hulten, Jack Jeffrey, Evan Lee, Kristi Malakoff, Shannon Oksanen, Kathy Slade, Gordon Smith, T&T (Tony Romano and Tyler Brett), Jacques de la Villeglé, and Neil Wedman. Hardcover. Condition: New. 1st Edition. Hardcover in tan cloth, New. First Luath Edition, pp 223, bibliography. Ossian is a collection of epic poems that bring out the figure of the hero, Fingal, which name comes from Scots Gaelic Fionnghall, meaning 'White Stranger'. The poems where originally written in Gaelic and translated by James MacPherson into English, although there is a long lasting debate about the authenticity of the poems, since some historians believe MacPherson wrote them himself, whilst Irish historians hold that Ossian has its roots in Irish myths, not Scottish. Despite the debate, The Poems of Ossian achieved international success and have been compared with Homer's Iliad, inspiring many later writers such as Walter Scott and Goethe.…

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. How colonialism shaped the Scottish Enlightenment's conception of race and humanity In the decades after 1750, an increasing number of former medical students from the University of Edinburgh construed humanity as a subject of both intellectual curiosity and colonial interest. They drew on a shared educational background, blending medicine with natural history and moral philosophy, in a range of encounters with non-European and Indigenous peoples across the globe whom they began to classify as races. Focusing on a surprising number of these understudied students, this book reveals the gradual predominance of race in Scottish Enlightenment thought. Teaching provided a toolbox of concepts and theories for students who went on to careers as military and naval surgeons, colonial administrators, and natural historians. While some, such as Mungo Parkwho traveled in Africaare well known, many others such as the long-term residents in the Russian Empire, Matthew Guthrie and his wife, Maria Guthrie, or the Caribbean botanist Alexander Anderson are less remembered. Among this group were those such as the Pacific traveler Archibald Menzies and the circumnavigator of Australia, Robert Brown, who are known primarily as botanists rather than as ethnographers. Together they formed a global network of colonial travelers and natural historians sharing a common educational background and a growing interest in race.
