Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Ambrosiaster ("Star of Ambrose") is the name given to the anonymous author of the earliest complete Latin commentary on the thirteen epistles of Paul. The commentaries were thought to have been written by Ambrose throughout the Middle Ages, but their authorship was challenged by Er…asmus, whose arguments have proved decisive. The commentaries, which serve as important witnesses to pre-Vulgate Latin versions of Paul's epistles, are noteworthy in several respects. Ambrosiaster was a careful and thoughtful interpreter, who made little use of allegory, though he employed typology judiciously. Writing during the pontificate of Damasus (366-384), he is a witness to Nicene orthodoxy and frequently comments on themes related to the Trinity, the consubstantiality of the Son, the problem of the unbelief of the Jews and the nature of human sinfulness. He had a keen eye for moral issues and often offers comments that reflect his knowledge of how the church had changed from the time of the apostles to his own day. Here for the first time his commentaries on Galatians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 1-2 Thessalonians, 1-2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon are made available in English, ably translated and edited by Gerald L. Bray. This ACT volume is the second of two volumes that will offer a first English translation of the anonymous fourth-century commentary on the thirteen letters of Paul. Widely viewed as one of the finest pre-Reformation commentaries on the Pauline Epistles, this commentary, until the time of Erasmus, was attributed to Ambrose. It was Erasmus who gave the author the epithet Ambrosiaster ("Star of Ambrose"). Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

XX, cuando se publicó la primera y hasta ahora última edición crítica de este texto, atribuida a un Pseudo-Agustín. El título de esta obra es…Quaestiones veteris et novi Testamenti CXXVII. En la edición de la colección que compone el Corpus Scriptorum Ecclesiasticorum Latinorum (CSEL), sobre la que está hecha la traducción presente, e incluye también un Appendix continens alterius Editionis Quaestiones selectas. La primera parte contiene, como dice el título, ciento veintisiete cuestiones o capítulos. La segunda está compuesta por otras noventa y cinco, que no están incluidas en la primera recensión, de algunas de las cuales tampoco se conserva el texto, lo que suma otras sesenta y una en total. El autor da pistas tanto sobre la fecha como sobre el lugar de composición de esta obra: en torno a 370 en Roma. Es evidente que conoce la obra de Cicerón, Salustio, Virgilio, Tito Livio, Valerio Máximo y Justino, así como las recopilaciones de leyes que han llegado hasta nosotros como códigos. Por otra parte, ha leído y estudiado la Sagrada Escritura y hay citas indirectas pero claras de la obra de Ireneo, Tertuliano, Cipriano de Cartago, Victorino de Petau, Hilario de Poitiers y Eusebio de Vercelli. Lo más llamativo de su doctrina teológica es su insistencia en defender la divinidad del Espíritu Santo, un tema apasionadamente discutido en su época.
