The dust jacket is mostly clean and bright, but does have spots of ground-in dirt, especially to the front panel. "Duggan's novels are known for being based on meticulous historical research. He also wrote popular histories of Ancient Rome and the Middle Ages. Knight with Armour was his first novel, written in 1946. He visited practically every place and battlefield described in the book, because he was also an archaeologist, having worked on excavations in Istanbul during the 1930s. Unlike many historical novelists, he does not idealise his subjects. A few of the characters are noble, some rather nasty, many mixed in their motives. Some of the novels can be seen as funny, in a dry, noir style. This appears to have been how it was produced - odd as the magazines had different publishers. Contains 'Bitter Creek Buckaroo' by Bond, 'Empty Saddles' by Grinstead, 'Outlaws of the Chaparral' by Ware, 'Ham Swings a Wide Loop' by Garry, 'Boothill Dare' by Steele, 'Side Meat' by MacDowell, 'Law in his Holster' by Bosworth and 'The Hitching Rail' by Benson. All the stories have illustrations but they are uncredited - three have the signatures Murphy, Sherman and Schomburg however. There is chipping to the edges of the covers. The pages are browned with some spotting in places and some small edge tears and creases to a few pages. Postage charge will be reduced by £1.50 when the order is processed.
