Jahrhunderts beeinflusst. Piet Mondrian hatte einen entscheidenden Einfluss auf die Entwicklung der Malerei von der Figuration zur Abstraktion. Anlässlich seines 150. Geburtstags widmet sich »Mondrian. Evolution« seinem facettenreichen Werk und seiner künstlerischen Entwicklung. Zunächst arbeitete er in der Tradition der niederländischen Landschaftsmalerei des späten 19. Jahrhunderts, später gewannen Symbolismus und Kubismus für ihn große Bedeutung. Erst in den frühen 1920er Jahren konzentrierte sich der Künstler auf eine gänzlich nicht-gegenständliche Bildsprache, die sich auf die rechteckige Anordnung schwarzer Linien mit Flächen in Weiß und den Primärfarben Blau, Rot und Gelb fokussierte. In einzelnen Kapiteln wird dieser Weg anhand von Motiven wie Windmühlen, Dünen, dem Meer, sich im Wasser spiegelnden Bauernhöfen und Pflanzen in verschiedenen Formen der Abstraktion nachgezeichnet.
