Later, working as a shoemaker in Soho, his recollections of the war were written down by Henry Curling and published in 1848. This edition has been re-edited by Eileen Hathaway to put Harris' disjointed recollections into chronological order. Hathaway has also provided linking passages giving historical context to the story, with quotations from the diaries and memoirs of Harris' fellow soldiers. Appears unread; as new. John Rattenbury, born in Devon in 1778, was a seaman and fisherman who turned to smuggling to earn a living. After thirty years in the trade he was so notorious that he was prevailed upon to relate his adventures for a book, Memoirs of A Smuggler published in 1837. Although Rattenbury gave a good account of his own involvement in smuggling, he said little about the organisations of which he had been a member for fear or identifying former associates. Researchers in archives in London and the West County has enabled Eileen Hathaway to fill many of the gaps, therefore this book offers you not only Rattenbury's memoirs, but also much of the information left out.…
