After thirty years in the trade he was so notorious that he was prevailed upon to relate his adventures for a book, Memoirs of A Smuggler published in 1837. Although Rattenbury gave a good account of his own involvement in smuggling, he said little about the organisations of which he had been a member for fear or identifying former associates. Researchers in archives in London and the West County has enabled Eileen Hathaway to fill many of the gaps, therefore this book offers you not only Rattenbury's memoirs, but also much of the information left out.
