Contact seller5-star sellerFirst edition, first state of Anthony Finley's 1824 map of North Carolina - engraving with original hand coloring. Sheet dimensions approximately H 26.25cm x L 34cm (approx. H 10 1/4 inches x L 13 3/8 inches). Image borders are H 21.6cm x L 29.2cm (H 8 1/2 inches x 11 1/2 inches). Some toning and foxing; mild soiling/staining at… margins; edge tear and small paper loss (resembling a small hole-punch) at lower left not affecting image; handwritten pencil note "1824" at bottom center; two mild creases at right. Hand coloring in green, pink, yellow, and muted faint beige remains strong and delineates counties from the Atlantic seacoast to the western mountains. Illustrated with major towns, transportation routes, and waterways. Conforms to the issue points for the early 1824 first edition, first state for does not show Davidson County (which was carved out of Rowan County in 1822) nor does it show Greensboro in Guilford County as these errors were corrected for the map's second state published sometime in the latter half of 1824 (please refer to the North Carolina cartobibliography website for a collation of issue points among the various Finley editions). Extracted from Finley's 1824 atlas which was titled as "A New General Atlas Comprising a Complete Set of Maps, Representing the Grand Divisions of the Globe, Together with the several Empires, Kingdoms, and States in the World; Compiled from the Best Authorities, and corrected by the Most Recent Discoveries." The title page also notes that the atlas was "Written and Engraved By Jos. Perkins [Joseph Perkins]" but, however, only "Young & Delleker Sc." (for James H. Young and George Delleker) are credited at the map's bottom right. Unmatted and unframed. Will ship flat. Jpegs images furnished upon request.
