It is very uncommon to find an early 19th century exclusively depicting New Hampshire, as most maps of the period bundled it with Vermont. Identifies Grand Monadnock Mn., Moosehillock Mn., and Mount Washington. Moosehead lake (Maine) is shown listed by it's earlier title: "Moosetocmaguntic Lake". First edition of a highly importa…nt pocket map of New York State. Orleans County is not yet present. A second edition, with Orleans County, and dated 1825, was included in Finley's A New American Atlas (1826). Rumsey notes that the atlas was an "attempt to compete with Tanner's American Atlas. the cartography and engraving are equal to Tanner, although the scale and map size are smaller." In 1831 the plates for the atlas were sold to S. Augustus Mitchell, who revised the maps and brought out a new edition in that year. Mitchell continued to issue the maps separately in pocket form until about 1850. Not in Phillips. Rumsey 2587.

This is one of the nicest copies I have handled over the last 30 years. Map has four very tiny folding tears. All have been repaired with filmoplast. A paper mendin…g tape. Tape does not fade or stain and can be removed without any damage. Tape is very hard to see with the naked eye. Hand colored map is very bright with vivid colors. Title gilt to black Morocco panel on… box. Rebacked with printed paper label to the spine. Front and rear boards worn. Foxing and off-setting throughout. Endpapers renewed. Anthony Finley (1784-1836) was a book and map publisher, based in Philadelphia. Although much of Finley's cartographic material was borrowed from European sources, his work was highly regarded for its fine quality and precision. There is a blind stamp of "Rittenhouse Club" to the foot of the title page. It is partially detached. This atlas was also published in a pocket edition. Finley published maps of the United States until 1831 when he sold his map and atlas copyrights to S. August Mitchell.

A brilliant copy of an early map of the old Northwest, including a… large portion of Michigan which includes all of Saginaw Bay. Michigan contains only 11 counties. Illinois is largely undeveloped north and east of Springfield, with the southern counties of Fayette, Edgar and Clark extending far into the north. An extension of Edgar County runs northeast to Lake Michigan and includes Chicago and Fort Dearborn. Karpinski 99. Pastedown slip is dated 1828.
