La increíble expedición, seguida con apasionado interés por la sociedad sue…ca de la época, tuvo un desenlace fatal: después de tres días de vuelo, el globo descendió hasta caer en un banco de hielo y los tres intrépidos aventureros subsistieron unos meses hasta fallecer. Probablemente, la aventura del Örnen se habría ido desvaneciendo en la memoria escrita y oral europea si no fuera porque, 33 años después, en una nueva expedición ártica, se halló el último campamento de los exploradores suecos. Entre sus pertenencias se encontraba todo el material fotográfico que había ido elaborando Nils Strindberg y, de repente, la cuasi leyenda del Örnen se hizo imagen. Esta historia es la que da origen al presente coloquio en dos ensayos entre el fotógrafo y crítico Joan Fontcuberta y el filósofo Xavier Antich . El viaje del Örnen y el legado de negativos fotográficos de Strindberg deteriorados como un cuerpo herido sirven a Fontcuberta para reflexionar sobre la humanidad de la fotografía y la perdurabilidad de las imágenes en una época en la que parecen haber perdido precisamente su carácter material esencial. Para el pensador, las fotografías pueden llegar a ser tan enigmáticas como la vida: nacen en un instante, fijan un momento y, a medida que pasa el tiempo, adquieren nuevas dimensiones vinculadas a la memoria. Todo ello lleva a Antich a reflexionar sobre la propia construcción de la mirada y la memoria visual no solo a través de la fotografía sino también a través del arte y la literatura.
