Formerly in the collection of R. O. Blechman, an American animator, illustrator, children's-book author, graphic novelist and editorial cartoonist whose work has been the subject of retrospectives at the Museum of Modern Art and other institutions. First edition, first printing. Edited by Leonard Woolf, who explains in the preface it was his hope to extract and distill entries culled from 26 volumes of diaries that related to her own writing, and indeed, the writing process and life as she lived it. While she began keeping diaries in 1915, this edition contains excerpts from August 1918 where, in referring to Katherine Mansfield, Woolf writes, "I threw down BLISS with the exclamation, 'She's done for!' . I shall have to accept the fact, I am afraid, that her mind is very thin soil, laid an inch or two deep upon very barren rock," to Sunday, March 8, 1941, "Occupation is essential. And now with some pleasure I find that it's seven; and must cook dinner. Haddock and sausage meat. I think it is true that one gains a certain hold on sausage and haddock by writing them down." .
