Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. First American Edition (SD). I'm pricing this book as, by far, the least expensive first American edition. The condition rating is only Fair due entirely to the covers. The interior of the book, the pages, are in very good condition. You can see the covers in the photos. There is rub-thro…ugh at the four corners which includes a little loss at the bottom two. There are small bits of loss off of the edges. There is loss on the rear side of the spine, off the top edge of the spine, and off the label on the spine. There is a good deal of rub-through on all of the edges, the top, middle and bottom ones. You can also see a few closed tears on the spine. Having gotten that out of the way, the pages are in very good condition. They are very clean. I turned them all over. I saw a half-dozen or so very small tan spots, all at the margin. I saw only two top corner creases. There is a little crinkling here and there. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. The book is also solidly bound. The pages are reasonably tight throughout, as are the covers. I didn't see any binding issues at all. 'Ivan Alekseyevich Bunin was the first Russian writer awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. He was noted for the strict artistry with which he carried on the classical Russian traditions in the writing of prose and poetry. The texture of his poems and stories, sometimes referred to as 'Bunin brocade' is considered to be one of the richest in the language. Bunin was a revered figure among white emigres, European critics, and many of his fellow writers, who viewed him as a true heir to the tradition of realism in Russian literature established by Tolstoy and Chekhov.' The titles of the three 'Other' stories are Gentle Breathing, Kasimir Stanislavavitch, and Son.

First edition. Richmond: Published by Leonard & Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, [printed by William Clowes and Sons, Ltd., London and Beccles], 1922. [6 - including half-title], 86 pages, plus [2] pages ads. No errata slip present. Original publisher's decorative paper-covered boards with printed paper spine and cover label…s. 18 x 12 cm. The spine label is sunned and slightly chipped with no impact on lettering; light wear to spine ends and a tiny tear to the head of the spine. The endpapers are slightly tanned; the text block shows mild, uniform toning. Still, a very good copy of a fragile volume. Bookseller's ticket of The Holliday Bookshop, New York (10 W. 47th St.), on the rear pastedown. PROVENANCE: This copy from the library of Irma Liebmann Harris (1885-1969), with her engraved bookplate on the front pastedown. [Harris was a member of a prominent Jewish family from Atlanta, Georgia, and a leading figure in the city's social and cultural life. She was the daughter of Isaac Liebman, founder and president of the Atlanta Paper Company (18861924). In 1908, she married Arthur Israel Harris (18811963), who succeeded Liebman as president of the company (19241946) and later served as chairman (19471957). The firm pioneered wet-strength packaging vital to the U.S. military during World War II and secured major contracts with Coca-Cola and other beverage companies. Irma Harris was a civic leader, serving with the Girl Scouts, the Atlanta USO during World War II, Travelers Aid, the Atlanta Council of Jewish Women, and as founder and president of the Peachtree Garden Club. An avid art and book collector, she read extensively in French and German. Her bookplate is signed in the plate "K. Merrill," likely the work of the American painter and etcher Katherine Merrill (18761962).] FIRST EDITION. Some copies are found with an errata slip tipped-in before the title page that states, "The first story in this book, 'The Gentleman from San Francisco,' is translated by D.H. Lawrence and S.S. Koteliansky. Owing to a mistake, Mr. Lawrence's name has been omitted from the title-page. The three other stories are translated by S.S. Koteliansky and Leonard Woolf." The title story was first printed in 1915 in the Russian anthology, "Provo." It is set on the island of Capri, where the author lived the last few winters before the start of the First World War. Ivan Bunin later became the first Russian to win the Nobel Prize for Literature (1933). Woolmer, "A Checklist of the Hogarth Press, 1917-1946," 19. Roberts, "A Bibliography of D.H. Lawrence," B9.
