Pese a su aparente sencillez estilí…stica, se trata de un texto de alta densidad semántica, que entronca con la tradición de la literatura sapiencial de la península Ibérica y presenta ciertas semejanzas con los escritos de Teresa de Jesús. La edición crítica de los Ditos diversos se acompaña de un completo aparato de variantes de las dos versiones del siglo XVI conservadas en la Biblioteca Pública de Évora y la Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal. Recluida en el retiro del Salvador de Évora, distanciada y desengañada de las vanidades del mundo, Joana da Gama compuso un alfabeto de máximas y versos que expresan la sabiduría que solo se alcanza con el paso del tiempo.
