Contact seller5-star sellerEx-library copy. First edition, State B (with matching 1863 dates upon title and copyright pages but with publisher ad at rear specifying binding and price). [frontis], i-viii, 1-225, [3], 1-22 pages. Hardcover: H 18.75cm x L 12cm. Contemporary green patterned cloth; spine ends chipped with white ink library shelf number below c…enter (no interior library markings); board corners worn. 19th century bookplate for John McAllister on front pastedown; 20th century bookplate for Blanche Colton Williams on front free endpaper recto; past bookseller's pencil note on ffep verso. Binding cracked with interior spine pulled away from text block; frontispiece inclusive to page 2 detached; some brittleness to leaves with resulting tears and/or shallow chipping at margins of initial leaves inclusive to page 6 with other occasional occurrences within text block. Book now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which aids the compromised binding and modestly enhances the book's compromised shelf presence. Leadoff poem "The Wayside Inn" on pages 1-17 and "Paul Revere's Ride" on pages 18-25. Bound-in at rear is November 1863 twenty-two page publisher catalog "A List of Books Published by Messrs. Ticknor and Fields" with page 11 ad for this book described as "Cloth. bevelled boards and gilt top, $1.25" making this a later state (whereas first state ad describes book as "Nearly ready" and without a price). Blanche Colton Williams (1879-1944) who graduated from Industrial Institute and College (now Mississippi University for Women - MUW) in Columbus, Mississippi in 1898 before earning a masters and doctorate from Columbia University. Williams taught at New York City's Hunter College rising to full professor and English department head in 1926 before retiring in 1939. A renowned expert on the short story form, Williams chaired the O'Henry Memorial Awards Committee from 1919-1932. William's passed away in Jackson, Mississippi in 1944 and a large portions of her personal library were donated to MUW and to Delta State Teachers College (now Delta State University) but the disposition of the remainder is unknown although a number of her books (per the presence of her bookplate) have popped up in various Columbus, Mississippi estates over the years - it seems likely that MUW culled the donation and sold those that were determined to be extraneous to their needs. A poor copy in need of re-binding and sold as is but a nice association to perhaps Mississippi's foremost early twentieth century literary academic.
