The author, a president of University College, Dublin, argues that Irish Catholics do not have equal opportunities for higher education. They must attend a college that ignores religion altogether, or they can seek education at a Catholic school that does not receive government assistance. This disadvantages them, as they are not eligible for religious-based scholarships, and there is an anti-Catholic sentiment in Ireland that has led to unfair distribution of public funds for higher education. The author argues for equal treatment for Catholics in higher education.
