Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a fresh perspective on the Bible, drawing on recent critical scholarship to illuminate its significance for contemporary readers. The author contends that the Bible is not merely a collection of historical accounts but a profound spiritual guide that reveals God's progressive revelation of Himself. Through a critical examination of the Old Testament, the book demonstrates how our understanding of God has evolved over time, leading to a more nuanced appreciation of His nature. The author emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between the essential message of the Bible and its historical context, arguing that this approach enhances spiritual growth and strengthens faith. By examining the Bible in its historical and literary contexts, the book provides a deeper understanding of its teachings and their relevance to our lives today. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. xii, 706 p. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Original boards, modern spine cloth. Minor rubbing to boards extremities. A clean copy with unmarked pages. Ladd's concept of the Congress of Nations was an early American proposal for an international peace regime, similar in many ways to the later League of Nations and United Nations. The essays presented are quite remarkable in their forward thinking and liberal/humanistic view of international relations. Particularly interesting topics include the international Slave Trade (primarily concerning Brazil), the post-Napoleonic Europe, the law of nations, rules of war, and the distinctly American internationalist perspective. Many of the writings appear to be influenced by a Quaker world view. Essays by John A. Bolles, Hamilton [pseud.]. M., [pseud] Thomas C. Upham, A friend of peace, and William Ladd. Appendix: Speeches, petitions, etc., concerning the establishment of a Congress of nations. Judges included John Quincy Adams, Joseph Story, and Daniel Webster.

First Edition
First Edition. First printing. Octavo (24cm). In original dark brown cloth, blind-stamped on boards, titled in gold on spine; plain endpapers; xiii, [vi], xii [13] 14-706pp. A straight, tight copy, spine sunned, rubbed at extremities, with inch-long crack to base of lower joint; minor foxing throughout, but otherwise bright: Very Good. In the 1830s the American Peace Society held an essay contest "on the subject of a Congress of Nations," judged by John Quincy Adams, James Kent, and Daniel Webster (iii, v). This volume collected the best essays, as well as Ladd's own contribution--intended as a summary of rejected essays, but in fact an outline of his own concept of a "congress and a supreme court of nations" modeled on the American government. This scheme was "mainly reponsible for engendering the international peace movement of the mid-nineteenth century under the leadership of Elihu Burritt" (ANB). Ladd's essay was also published separately in 1840 as An Essay on a Congress of Nations (priority unknown; see American Imprints 40-3846). See Brock, Pacifism in the United States p.487.
