Wilkinson was the first Chichele Professor of Military History at Oxford University, and wrote many books on military and other subjects, among them 'The French Army before Napoleon' (1915) and 'The Defence of Piedmont, 1742-1748: A Prelude to the Study of Napoleon' (1927). Contains a b&w reproduction of Napoleon's portrait as frontispiece (painted by Antoine-Jean Gros in 1797, from Louvre collection), 24 b&w maps and a large fold-out color map of Genoa (Genova). Frontispiece of Field Marshal Lord Roberts and seven other full page tissue guarded photgravures (Some of the guards have been replaced. Lots of illustrations. Each page has attractive pictorial borders. The second photgravure is of Spencer Wilkinson and his staff of ten artists, three of whom have signed on an attribution page opposite. Signed also by Bruce S Ingram, the editor. This is number 54 in an unspecified production run. The last engagement described was on December 1st, 1900, by which time it was only the most dedicated of the 'bittereinders' who were continuing the fight - the Treaty of Vereeniging, which ended the War formally, was not signed until May 1902.
