He has been noted a prime example of the so-called "kailyard school " of Scottish literature, by critics. In addition to his popular novels, he wrote a number of books on religious topics. He was invited to lecture at Yale University the year after publication of this novel. A "Cranford style" illustrated gift book in the vein of the contemporary Macmillan /Hugh Thomson et al illustrated editions. A really good read. Book.
