Paperback. Condition: New. Print on Demand. This book examines two distinct but related systems of punishment that developed in England and Ireland in the early to mid-nineteenth century, revealing their evolution in the face of a changing penal landscape. The author highlights the challenges faced by both systems as they grappled with the task of reforming convicts, balancing rehabilitation and deterrence. By analyzing the origins, principles, and practices of these systems, the book sheds light on the complex interplay between societal attitudes towards crime and punishment, the role of government in shaping penal policy, and the ongoing search for effective and humane methods of dealing with criminal behavior. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.
