Contact seller5-star sellerHardcover. Condition: Fair. 45 pen-and-ink illustrations. 98 pages. The cloth binding, blue and grey with silver embossing, is detached; pages are still bound, but loosely. There are two inscriptions on the front end papers from previous owners. No loss of content; very readable. Evangeline, A Tale of Acadie is an epic poem by t…he American poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, written in English and published in 1847. The poem follows an Acadian girl named Evangeline and her search for her lost love Gabriel during the expulsion of the Acadians (1755-1764). The idea for the poem came from Longfellow's friend Nathaniel Hawthorne. Longfellow used dactylic hexameter, imitating Greek and Latin classics. Though the choice was criticized, it became Longfellow's most famous work in his lifetime and remains one of his most popular and enduring works. The poem had a powerful effect in defining both Acadian history and identity in the 19th and 20th centuries. It represents lost loved ones and heartbreak but also keeping hope. Evangeline describes the betrothal of a fictional Acadian girl named Evangeline Bellefontaine to her beloved, Gabriel Lajeunesse, and their separation as the British deport the Acadians from Acadie in the Great Upheaval. The poem then follows Evangeline across the landscapes of America as she spends years in a search for him, at some times being near to Gabriel without realizing he was near. Finally she settles in Philadelphia and, as an old woman, works as a Sister of Mercy among the poor. While tending the dying during an epidemic she finds Gabriel among the sick, and he dies in her arms. (summary from Wikipedia.). Birket Foster, John Gilbert, Jane E. Benham (illustrator).

Brown decorative cloth boards with elaborate gilt title, a little rubbing to edges/spine, slight fraying to spine ends, minor scuffing/soiling. Decorative endpapers.16 chromolithographs plus sepia tone lithographs and brown ink etchings by Jane Willis Grey. King Robert of Sicily, was a significant figure in Italian politics during the 14th century. Upon his father's death in 1309, Robert became the king of Naples. His reign was marked by a period of relative stability compared to his father and grandfather's reigns, but it was also characterized by conflicts with Germanic powers in northern Italy and the House of Barcelona in the western Mediterranean. Longfellow poem is a fictionalised narrative that captures the essence of the king's pride and the divine intervention that ultimately leads to his downfall. The story is a blend of historical events and fantastical elements, creating a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. A sumptuously illustrated edition. Grey, Jane Willis (illustrator).
