Add to basketHardcover. Condition: As New. First Edition. Fine-looking, structurally sound hardcover, little discernible wear to the pictorial cloth over boards, bright interior, unmarked. Contributions by the three editors and by Lone Lindholt, Thomas Pegram, B.C. Patel, Kofi Quashigah, Mohammad Abdo, Laurien J.L. Koster, Jozef De Witte and… others. The volume examines the role of national human rights institutions (N.H.R.I.s) in monitoring economic, social, and cultural (E.S.C.) rights. It challenges the assumption that NHRIs are less effective in relation to E.S.C. rights than civil and political rights. It argues that N.H.R.I.s do play a strategic role in ensuring states' compliance not only with their obligations to respect and protect E.S.C. rights but also in addressing the obligation to fulfil them. The editors and contributors consider the ways in which the particularities of local context affect an institution's ability to effectively address E.S.C. rights and discusses the need to develop new approaches to deal with broader issues of resource allocation and socio-economic policy. Volume contains scholarly apparatus in the form of, e.g., notes, index, and bibliography. x, 1-190 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Human rights tend to focus on the relationship between individual and state: the individual is rights-holder, the state is duty-holder. Children's rights bring a third player much more in the picture, namely parents. Although legally speaking they are not duty-holders under the UN Convention… on the Rights of the Child, they do have a number of responsibilities under the CRC and other human rights instruments. States may have obligations to turn these parental responsibilities into national legal duties if that is needed to improve the legal and social position of children. Child rearing may still be considered by many to be within the private domain, i.e. a matter of concern only within the relationship between children and their parents, with the exception of instances of child abuse or neglect. In this volume, child-rearing responsibilities are examined in the light of children's rights and (other) human rights. All contributions focus in particular on the proposal to introduce an upbringing (or parenting) pledge. The upbringing pledge contains not only a statement of lasting commitment towards the child, but also an explicit declaration of commitment to respect and promote the rights of the child both as a person and as a human being who is utterly dependent upon his or her parents for his or her wellbeing and the development of his or her personality. By means of the upbringing pledge as a child rights based social institution, the responsibilities of society and the state towards both parents and children are re-affirmed as well. Human rights tend to focus on the relationship between the individual and the state the individual is the rights-holder, the state is the duty-holder. Children's rights bring a third player much more into the picture, namely the parents. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Over the past decade, EU and national policy-makers alike have paid more attention to childhood poverty and children's rights. Whether this has led to better policies, and whether these policies have in turn resulted in less childhood poverty and more human dignity, remains debatable. A bett…er understanding of both child poverty and children's rights could help. This book introduces several approaches in the field of child poverty and children's rights studies, and identifies intersections between different theoretical approaches from both domains. This is a fruitful exercise for the academic disciplines involved, for policy-makers and for anyone taking an interest in these challenging subjects. Children's rights may provide some common ground for the different perspectives on the causes of poverty. They also introduce specific process requirements, in particular the participation of the poor. At the same time, children's rights may gain from an encounter with child poverty studies, not least in grasping the complexity of child poverty and in making a realistic assessment of their own potential for addressing child poverty. This book is a collaborative project of Centrum OASeS and the UNICEF Chair in Children's Rights, both located at the University of Antwerp. The UNICEF Chair in Children's Rights is a joint initiative of UNICEF Belgium and the University of Antwerp, Faculty of Law. The Chair was established in 2007. It acts as a knowledge broker of children's rights within the academic community and between the academic community and policy and practice, through teaching, research and service to the community. More information: The more prominent research topics of the Centrum OASeS, Centre on Inequality, Poverty, Social Exclusion and the City include poverty and other forms of social exclusion, ethnic minorities, urban policy, social economy and supported employment, and social networks. Its projects reach from the very local to the European level (with participation in several Framework Programmes). More information: Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
