Paperback. Condition: Very Good. This beautifully illustrated book features jewellery and accessories from all over the world, such as ornate Eastern European bridal crowns and the silver and turquoise worn by the North African Navajo people. It shows the many different types of jewellery and accessories and the varying ways in…which they are used and made - for example, the different uses and meanings of natural materials (stones, feathers and shells) in jewellery. It also includes traditional jewellery and accessories for you to make, such as African anklets and an Indian 'evil eye' amulet. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

hardcover. Condition: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that… encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Hardback. Condition: New. For the past century and a half, extensive looting and illicit trafficking of Southeast Asia's cultural heritage have scattered art objects from the region to museums and private collections around the world. Today, however, power relations are shifting, a new awareness is growing, and new questions are… emerging about the representation and ownership of Southeast Asian cultural material located in the West. This book offers a timely consideration of object restitution and related issues across Southeast Asia, bringing together a range of viewpoints, including those of museum professionals and scholars in Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, as well as Europe, North America, and Australia. The contributors address legal, cultural, political and diplomatic issues involved in the restitution process, and they also look at the ways object restitution is integral to evolving narratives of national identity. Ultimately, the book's editors conclude, restitution processes can transform narratives of loss into opportunities for gain, building knowledge and reconstructing relationships across national borders.

Add to basketbrosch.; Schutzumschlag. Condition: Sehr gut. 59 Seiten, zahlr. Abb. Very good copy. - Printed and bound by Staib + Mayer, Stuttgart, Germany. / New forms and functions of art have been emerging everywhere in Africa. It is no longer possible to look at African art and see nothing but a continuous and rapid process of disintegrat…ion. African art has responded to the social and political upheavals that have taken place all over the continent. New types of artists give expression to new ideas, work for different clients, fulfil new functions' . / The images in Kinyozi: The Art of African Hairstyles (2) are not the creations of trained artists who normally show their work in spacious and carefully lit art galleries. Neither do these bold, commercial sign-boards fall into the category of 'tourist art'. Rather, this is the art of painters with little or no formal artistic education. It is graphic, extroverted, street art used to advertise and entice. In Nairobi, Kenya, such street art is found in the poorest, working-class neighbourhoods, around River Road and the Mathare Valley area. It is made by people who would not consider themselves to be artists in any Western sense of the word, but who design and paint boards as a way to earn money to survive. During the past thirty years, commercial visual imagery has developed into one of Africa's most vibrant and multi-faceted art traditions. It has been variously termed 'urban art', 'popular art', 'sign-painter's art' and has even been dubbed 'African Pop Art'. Sign-paintings vary enormously from the small A5-size hairstyle designs to elaborate multi-coloured murals which cover the walls of city bars and restaurants. These signs are a conspicuous part of urban popular culture and reflect the wider changes taking place in cities across the whole of the African continent changes away from traditional village life, from closely-knit and intimate social relations, to the modern, anonymous world of industrial mass culture and commerce. Such changes anticipate the breakdown of older ethnic distinctions, and the creation of new, national-interest groups or class-based identities with their own distinct political challenges and calls for emancipation. As Homi Bhabha eloquently notes: 'The borderline artist performs c poetics of the open-border between cultures. She displays the 'interstices', the overlappings and interleavings, the hither and thither that is part of the history of those peoples whose identities are crafted from the experience of social displacement' (3).
