Escott-Inman's original work was a novel, based on the true story of a shipwreck on the Auckland Islands (one of New Zealand's groups of subantarctic islands) in 1907. Twelve lives were lost in the wreck, and fifteen survivors had to fend for themselves on Disappointment Island for eight months until their rescue.
