The title of the exhibition, Combi-Nation, is a play on words and refers to the fact that the artists work with ôimpure strategiesö, (combining diverse elements in the same work); furthermore, in Spanish the word has the connotation of the ôunification of nationsö. The subtitle, imagen sueca, strives to indicate that the artists represented here are all dealing with a common theme: ôThe Image of Swedenö and that image is presented in many different ways., English, Year1993, Illust.

Hardback. Condition: New. Sonia Delaunay is one of the most important artists of the early twentieth century, whose contribution to European Modernism was fundamental, if not always fully acknowledged in its own right. She is known for translating her experiments via painting into the realm of fashion, interior design and crafts and, thus, consciously transcending the boundaries between fine and applied art. The focus within mainstream art history has been her relationship with her husband Robert Delaunay. Tom Sandqvist shifts this focus on her Jewish roots and sheds a light on the influence of growing up in the typical Eastern European shtetl, which has not attracted any special attention in the analysis of Delaunay's art. Tom Sandqvist reflects on the impact of Judaism on Sonia Delaunay's ouvre, with a special focus on her early contributions to Simultanism and Orphism within the interwar Parisian Avant-Garde.…

Why do we consider a dirty, broken coffee cup ugly when compared with a whole, round cup? How do we actually define what is ugly? Beautiful things have always been the objects for an aesthetic discussion in past decades, but the ugly has always been relegated to the background, existing simply as a negation of beauty, or its complete opposite. Sandqvist initiates a discussion concerning the concept of ugly as he sees the once definitive borders between ugly and beautiful become blurred in contemporary art and society. Beginning with StockholmÆs Modern Museum, he describes the evolution of the idea of beauty. In the end, Sandqvist wonders if ugliness will find its own unique place in our aesthetic, without any reference to concepts of beauty., Swedish, Year1998, Illust. B/W, Illust. Förlagsband, dek. skyddsomslag. Nyskick. Lund, Signum, 2005. 8:o. 368 sid.
