Full-Leather. Condition: Good. First Thus. Original 18th century calf binding. [8] + 160 pages. Signed by the previous owner, Jonathan Sheldon with the addition: "His book, bought in Boston, November 26, 1781". Captain Jonathan Sheldon (1748-1835) served as master of the American sloop "Tryall" during the Revolution. Additional…signature of Sheldon's great-great grandson Ernest L. Van Wagner, former Inspector Commanding Detectives, New York City Police Department. A remarkable piece of early Americana. A recent WorldCat search reveals only 3 complete copies held in institutional libraries worldwide. According to John F. Campbell, in The New American Practical Navigator, the book is "One of the earliest navigation manuals, if not the first, to carry an American imprint." Various scuffs and edgewear to leather. A few old moisture stains margins of a few leaves. Very mild foxing. Leaf containing pp. 147-48 torn, with loss of upper right corner including a portion of the text--approximately a quarter of the page.

Later edition; small 4to (20 x 16 cm); inscription to front pastedown dated 1911, lower margin corner of first few leaves a little nibbled; early 20th-century calf to style, blind ruled boards, five gilt ruled compartments to spine, gilt red morocco lettering piece, a little rubbed, a very good copy; [viii], 160 pp. One of the f…irst educational aides for sailors in recording navigational measurements during a voyage. This edition was the first to be reprinted in America, which was the first navigational guide of its type to be printed both sides of the Atlantic. The work includes a table of difference of latitude to each degree, instructions for working out position according to Mercator, tables of high water, the sun's ascension and declination, and the positions of the stars. Every edition of this work is scarce, due to the fact that it was a practical text which would have been carried by sailors on their many journeys. Initially printed in 1757, and their were over ten editions or versions printed prior to this one, which was the first chosen to be reprinted in the United States. There is only 1 UK institutional copy of this edition (Cambridge, not in BL) and 4 US copies.

Contact seller5-star sellerFirst American edition of this work, and the first book regarding practical navigation to be printed in the United States. It appeared fully twenty years before any other similar work in America. ESTC locates copies at only seven institutions: the American Antiquarian Society, the Huntington Library, the John Carter Brown Librar…y, New York Public Library, the Library of Congress, the Clements Library, and Yale University. Haselden was a prolific writer of guides for navigators and seamen, best known for his work concerning Mercator's chart and its uses. When the present work first appeared in 1722, he styled himself "Teacher of Mathematics.in the Royal Navy," and he was held in sufficiently high regard to be elected to the Royal Society in 1740, but he died before he could be installed as a Fellow. The present work was not issued in his lifetime, but was first printed by mapmakers Mount & Page in 1757. They kept it regularly in print (six more editions were issued between 1761 and 1775), and it had become a standard work by the time this Philadelphia edition was published, no doubt an attempt to provide a basic work for mariners whose supply of British editions was cut off by the American Revolution. The text covers a wide variety of information needed by sailors, from discerning latitude and longitude to various sailing methods to tips for keeping a journal while at sea. This work's rarity may possibly be accounted for by its having been published in Philadelphia in 1777, when the city was besieged by the British and subsequent destruction. Evans lists this work but could not find a copy to collate, and at the time Rosenbach offered a copy (in his famous catalogue, The Sea, in 1938 for $400; in the same catalogue a Hennepin was priced at $65), he could not locate another. Although copies are now known in the major institutions listed above, copies appear in the market infrequently. The last complete copy at auction was the Frank Streeter copy, which sold for $21,600 in 2007. A landmark American first. EVANS 15360. ESTC W2994. RINK 3840. HILDEBURN 3555. ROSENBACH 19:314. JCB MARITIME HISTORY PRELIMINARY HANDLIST 146. DNB IX, p.106. Small quarto. Contemporary calf. Hinges neatly reinforced, boards a bit rubbed and shelfworn. Contemporary ownership signatures of Daniel Henderson on front endpapers and titlepage. Light, even tanning; an occasional bit of marginal staining. Very good.
