Publication: London, John Clarke, 1730 Formatting: 8vo, pp. [viii], 350. Condition Report: Good. The volume is bound in contemporary full calf, though the binding has sustained significant wear over the centuries, exhibiting heavy rubbing, widespread surface loss to the epidermis, and notable scuffing across both boards. The extremities are heavily bumped with the board exposed at the corners, and the spine shows substantial wear at the head and tail caps alongside some cracking and rubbing to the upper and lower joints, though the boards remain securely attached. Internally, the text block is solid and tightly bound despite typical antiquarian age-toning and some scattered foxing. The preliminary leaves and endpapers show signs of historical handling, including some offset ink staining from previous use of the folding mathematical plates, yet the leaves remain wholly legible and structurally sound. Catalogue Note: This is the first English edition of the Abbot de Molià resâs influential mathematical treatise, originally delivered as lectures at the Collà ge Royal in Paris and translated for English students by Thomas Haselden. The volume is notably illustrated, complete with seven folding engraved plates featuring mathematical formulas, polynomial roots, and geometric calculations to support the text. This copy bears the early ink ownership signatures of "William Kipling" of Barnard Castle, Durham, dated July 6th, 1820. As a heavily utilized eighteenth-century educational textbook, copies in their original contemporary bindings are exceptionally uncommon, rendering this a scarce title on the open market today. A fascinating window into early eighteenth-century mathematical education, this rare translation of the Abbot de Molià resâs lectures offers foundational instruction in mathematics and natural philosophy. Translated by Thomas Haselden, a prominent teacher to the Royal Navy, the text bridges French academic rigor with British practical application. Supported by detailed folding plates, it serves as an exceptional artifact of Enlightenment-era scientific pedagogy.…
