1803 stellte Meigen die Gattungen Chironomus, Tanypus, Ceratopogon auf. Über 100 Jahre blieben diese Namen im Gebrauch; sie finden sich in Lehrbüchern wie Spezialarbeiten, und wenn man Chironomus", Tanypus" oder Ceratopogon" las, so wußte man, was für Tiere man unter diesen Namen zu verstehen hatte. Aber im Jahre 1908 begann das… Chaos! Denn da grub unglücklicherweise Friedrich Hendel Meigens bis dahin verschollenes Jugendwerk von 1800 aus und druckte es, mit einem Kommentar versehen, in den Verhandlungen der Zoologisch-Botanischen Gesellschaft Wien (58, 43-69) ab. Meigen selbst hat dieses sein Erstlingswerk später nie erwähnt; sogar den Fachentomologen blieb es so gut wie ganz unbekannt, bis Hendel es aus der Vergangenheit hervorzug. In diesem Werk wird die Gattung Chironomus Tendipes, Tanypus Pelopia, Ceratopogon Helea genannt; und bei strenger Anwendung des Prioritätsgesetezes müßten die Namen von 1800 an Stelle der bisher gebräuchlichen - von 1803 - treten. Zwei Hauptgesichtspunkte sind zu berücksichtigen, will man die heutige Verteilung der einzelnen Tiere und Pflanzen auf der Erde erklären. Ein Organismus kann sich nur dann an einer bestimmten Lebensstätte halten, wenn ihm dort alle unbedingt notwendigen Lebensbedingungen geboten werden, und wenn er seit seiner Entstehung und, se…itdem der betreffende Biotop sich gebildet oder für ihn besiedlungsfähig geworden ist, von seinem sonstigen Verbreitungsgebiet oder dem seiner Vorfahren an die betreffende Lebensstätte hat gelangen können. Man muß also die Lebensbedürfnisse einer Tier- oder Pflanzenart kennen, um beurteilen zu können, an welche Umweltbedingungen sie gebunden ist, ferner ihre Verbreitungsmittel und die Wege, die ihr für die Verbreitung offen standen, sowie die Schranken, die ihre Verbreitung erschwerten oder unmöglich machten. So hat die Biogeographie eine ökologische Seite, indem sie in den Lebensbedingungen, die an einem und um einen Biotop herrschen, die eine Ursache für das Auftreten eines Organismus an dieser Stätte erkennt. Sie hat aber auch eine historische Seite, denn das Bild der heutigen Verteilung des Lebens auf der Erde ist das Ergebnis einer geschichtlichen Entwicklung des betreffenden Organismus wie des von ihm besiedelten Gebietes. Eine Biogeographie, die nicht nur mit groben Strichen Umrißzeichnungen geben, sondern zum Verständnis der Einzelheiten in der Organismenverbreitung Vordringen will, muß stets beide Seiten, die ökologische wie die historische, berücksichtigen. "In der Geschichte jenes Lippenblütlers, der nur einige Alpwiesen Kärntens bewohnt, jenes Insektenfressers, der auf ein Pyrenäen-Hochtal beschränkt ist, oder des kleinsten Zwergvolkstammes im afrikanischen Urwald leben die Wirkungen der Größe und Gestalt, der Bewegungen, Masse und stofflichen Zusammensetzung des ganzen Erdballes" (Ratzel 1901, S. 1). In diesem Buche wird der Versuch gemacht, die geschichtliche Entwicklung der Süßwassertierweit Europas zu schildern, eine historischeTiergeographie der europäischen Binnengewässer zu geben.
