Het betreft het gebied kustzone, het gebied Brugge-Kortrijk en het gebied Westhoek. Is de kustzone uiteraard een toeristisch gebied bij uitstek, met de eigen problemen inzake ruimtelijke ordening ten einde het schaarser wordend natuurschoon er te beschermen, dan vormt het gebied Brugge-Kortrijk de eerder industriële streek. Ruim 80 percent van de industriële werkgelegenheid van West-Vlaanderen is er gelokalizeerd. De Westhoek is het zorgenkind. Ondanks de inspanningen die er de jongste jaren op infrastruktureel gebied worden gedaan, blijft het bevolkingscijfer er, ingevolge de enorme uitwijking, lager dan in 1910. Met water heeft men zowat overal in West-Vlaanderen moeilijkheden : aan de ene kant wordt een belangrijk programma gerealizeerd om de wateroverlast op te ruimen, elders is men op zoek naar bevloeiingswater voor land- en tuinbouw en voor de ganse provincie wordt het waarborgen van voldoende hoeveelheden drinkwater een nieuw probleem. Intussen worden modernizerings- plannen uitgewerkt voor de zeehavens en wordt het reeds zeer uitgebreide wegennet in de provincie verder aangepast aan de nieuwe behoeften. De tertiaire sektor blijft over de ganse provincie een groeiende bron van werkgelegenheid. De opties en de grote krachtlijnen voor de uitbouw van de toekomst van West-Vlaanderen, zoals zij in deze survey zijn geformuleerd, dienen getoetst aan de snel evoluerende sociaal-ekonomische realiteit. Indien deze studie re- de Stedebouw en de Ruimtelijke Ordening behoort, zijn doel bereikt met deze dan heeft het Departement van Openbare Werken, waartoe het Bestuur van ruimtelijke ordening voor het vrijwaren van de welvaart in deze provincie, akties voor of tegen uitlokt, met het doel samen te zoeken naar de beste publikatie.
