From the introduction: "Since the late forties, when Will Carter began what is best described as a printing practice, most of his working days have been spent in the printshop on the lowest floor of his house at Cambridg…e. From the room where the press stands and from the office next to it, windows look over the garden as it slopes to the River Cam just below Magdalene Bridge. Machining is done at the opposite side of the shop to the tiers of types in their cases. Between are benches, a guillotine and stacked jobs at various stages of completion. The adjoining office is ranged with works of reference, catalogues and files all set about the central desk, its typewriter and wreaths of correspondence. The press motors on and this tall, active craftsman bobs over his machine refining its impression as a new run begins. He talks then with equal compulsion about his letter-cutting on some newly arrived Welsh slate and stage-managing an evening madrigal concert on the river. The telephone rings, an order is doubled, the self-feed whisks more than one sheet of the flimsy stock into the press and fouls it, harsh words, deft corrections, printing resumes, the phone rings, the press runs on unattended. Two features of the Rampant Lions Press emerge." Elegant booklabel of J.F. Fuggles on the front inside board, Near Fine. Newspaper cutting with obituary of Will Carter laid in.

(Numbering is continuous from prior issue.) Thus: [2], [blank], [2], [blank], 95-144pp., [1], [blank], [1], [blank], [1], [blank], [5pp., vol. index and ads].**CONDITION: Very Good. Sound and clean, although with moderate folding which affects the margin of each page. Edges of the yapp-edged wraps have a few some minor (1/4 or less) tears and rumple, as seen. Very light browning at the spine. **Contents: British architect, preservationist, art historian and friend of William Morris, William Lethaby (1857-1931) provides an article entitled "Art, the Crafts, and the Function of Guilds." The onetime Surveyor for Westminster Abbey, Lethaby was responsible for the cleaning and preservation of the fabric of the building in the from 1906- 1928. Additionally, he was principal of London's Central School of Arts and Crafts, Professor of Design at the Royal College of Art and on the Committee for the Preservation of Ancient Buildings. Between 1894 and 1900 he had two building projects in Birmingham, which no doubt brought him into contact with the the work of the Guild. As an early friend of William Morris, he was also involved in the very early meetings of the Kelmscott Press, and later, as a defender of Morris's aims in the period after World War One when his work went somewhat out of favor. ( L. Parry, p. 21; Peterson, History, p. 290)** A portion of Robert Browning's 1852 narrative poem "Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came" is illustrated here by the English-born artist Inglis Sheldon Williams (1870-1940). The poem has been described as having moody, quest-like theme. Williams emigrated to Saskatchewan, Canada for a time, returning to London to study at the Slade School of Art, later traveling extensively and becoming an official war artist for the Canadians during the First World War. (Nat. Portrait Gallery) **A selection from William Caxton's "The Golden Legend," the Story of Seynt Kenelme, also appears in this issue. The text is presumably taken from William Morris and F.S. Ellis's three-volume Kelmscott edition of 1892, and there is certainly some fun to be had comparing the two sets of texts and noting the minor similarities and differences. However, the significant differences are found in the new illustrations and overall page design provided by the BGH artists, consisting of Meteyard's headpiece, the fancy initial capitals by H.A. Payne, as well as Tarling and Tregown's new full page illustrations of this story of the martyrdom of the ninth century King Kenelme, who was murdered by his sister Quyndrede and her lover Askeberd in an attempt to usurp power in the Welch Marches. Picturesque details of the tale provide ample fodder for the detail of these new drawings. (William Caxton, responsible for the printing of England's earliest books, had famously translated this book of saint's histories known as "The Golden Legend" from the original Latin version compiled by the medieval Bishop of Genoa, Jacobus de Voragine, published by Caxton in 1483.) Following this section are more items relating to the Kenelme story, including W.H. Bidlake's "A Note on Clent Church," and C.M. Gere's illustration of the same. [It is interesting to note that some of the art here was used in later editions of the "Golden Legend," cf. C.M. Gere's illustration in G.V. O'Neill's "The Golden Legend, Lives of the Saints" ( Cambridge, University Press, 1914.)] REFS: DNB, Linda Parry, edit. "William Morris," (New York," Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 1996). pp. 21, 35, 79 etc. W. S. Peterson, Bibliography, A7, pp.19-24. Peterson, History, pp. 290-293. [Please see related Quest issue 5, our no. 9419. The two issues are also available as a set, details upon request--it was thought best to list separately in order to provide differentiated detail.] Scarce. Sydney Meteyard, C.M. Gere, Inglis Sheldon Williams, Oliver Brasket, H. A. Payne, G.T. Tarling and E. G. Treglown (illustrator). Book.

Numbering is consecutive with that of Quest Issue No. 4, see our listing 9417. **CONDITION: About Fine, with a some very, very minor crease to front of wraps, slight darkening to spine, and some slight offset browning to text, seen opposite plates. Now with tissue inserted. Overall, though, this is clean and has been well cared for. **This issue has decidedly medieval and architectural themes, marking it relevant in the Pre-Raphaelite and William Morris vein of promoting the past as a template for chivalric values, proper, handmade workmanship, and honoring the labor of the craftsperson. Hence, the article" Notes Upon Some of the Differences Between Ancient and Modern Buildings," by the architect and metalworker Arthur Stansfield Dixon (1856-1929), founder of the Birmingham School of Handicraft, and designer of their original premises. Other highlights include Edmund Hort New's wonderful full-page illustration of the medieval French castle at Fougerès. Located in Brittany, this holdfast was destroyed by Henry II in the twelfth century, and later rebuilt as a more durable fortification, sheltering artisans such as tanners, weavers, drapers and, later, glass works. *Following is a selection from the "King's Quair," the 15th-century poem written by the Scottish King James I (1394- 1437), and decorated with illustration by J. Southall and a border by Sydney Meteyard. [The ten-year old King James I sailed from North Berwick, via Bass Rock, in 1403, as his father, King Richard III attempted to keep him safe from the Stewarts. However, James was kidnapped at sea, imprisoned in the Tower of London and, later, Windsor Castle, by agents of the English King Henry IV, and not released until 1424.] The verses are from stanza 42-43 of James's poem, unfortunately "english-afied" from the original Scots. His captivity introduced him to the woman who would become his queen, and this is the section of the poem represented in these pages. (See, Skeat, "The Kingis Quair." (Edinburgh and London: William Blackwood and Son, 1884) pp. vii-ix. Watson 567. C.M. Gere, E.H. New, A.S. Dixon, Sydney Meteyard, H. Payne, F. W. Faux, J. Southall, G.T. Tarling, E.G. Treglown (illustrator). Book.
